Honestly sad to see Twitter go a bit, it's been very good for opening horizons. But I'd lost interest in it anyway over the last few months, posting less and less, visiting less and less. too much noise, not enough signal. Find me at andrewdobson.co.uk and at Mastadon.

Facebook's issues today highlight the achilles heel of all digital platforms - when the noise outstrips the signal, people lose interest. If the content is irrelevant to me, then so is your platform. Those pushing never-ending content streams beware.

I recently argued that the metaverse needs a better design aesthetic and standards so I agree with *that* Horizon Worlds article. But an awful lot of people don't seem to understand the differences between 3D rendering technologies and target platforms and it shows.

I know you can build a business with 1000 true fans. So what can I do with 4?

Listening into conversations in metaverse spaces is basically like listening to NPC audio clips in GTA.

This is the single biggest limiting issue to the metaverse and it needs sorting out RIGHT NOW. The same is true of @recroom btw. I did a demo in it recently and the first interaction was what was clearly an American child telling me to f off. Not a good look for clients.

It's hard to overstate how clear it is that Horizon Worlds is full of young kids when you use it. Everyone I talked to for this story had encountered them and worried about them. I ran into several myself. And the reviews on the Oculus Store are... well... oculus.com/experiences/qu…

My Out of Office is now set until 4th January, thanks to @AcceptProceed implementing an extended break for us all to recharge after what has been such an intense year. The gift of time is so important 🙌🏻✨

@Nickhalo01 @Bogdana hard agree on that. but not to throw baby out with bathwater, because there is deffo value in spatial assets as a new, vital class of content for some brands (potentially as big as the shift to video a few years ago).

@Bogdana Not understood well enough from an agency standpoint + not enough research is being done to dig into the subject to formulate ideas on how it might unlock value. Plus of course, the danger is agencies would fuck it all up trying to monetise it with cheap thrill advertising.

How many of your day to day clients have raised the question of Facebook's Meta in any recent meetings?

@Bogdana A couple. Mostly curious about whether they need to care about the metaverse at all. I don't think it's a buzzword because I do think that various technology paradigms will converge to form what we broadly call this thing. But as for MV as platform...meh.

@hostler exactly that. Much in-engine design is procedural which is a further extension to the dynamic and systemic principles of digital.

@andrewdotdobson It’s all about the new production workflow and recognising that telling stories in synthetic media is different, and needs different skills, to telling them in optical media (even digital optical).

Convergence of game engines and vfx long predicted with the shift to real time. Hope studios have invested in these skills, they're going to need them.

@hostler which I guess would have been on the cards at one point, had Disney only had it's animation studios. Highlights the need to take a punt on where the puck is going.

Given the massive explosion of digital arts lately, it blows my mind that digital work is still often considered less crafted than fine arts and design. The amount of craft in code is staggering.

@PetrusLundqvist and to make it accessible, we need all vendors to adopt. WebXR would be well established by now if Apple weren't dragging their feet.

That said, today I need to bash out code and the office is the worst place to do that. Every interruption or disturbance can cost you valuable time when your train of logical thought gets derailed. Flexibility isn't do what you want, it's do what's best for the work.

Nuanced stuff from Jo here. I'm a fervent believer in working to the task, not the hours/location, and a massive advocate for home working, but I'm very much in 'maker mode' at the moment and the collaborative creative process benefits from being in the room with my team.
