Aberdeen's connection to insulin's history is through John Macleod, a key figure in its discovery. Born in Scotland, he moved to Aberdeen young, studied at Aberdeen Grammar School and University of Aberdeen (graduating 1898). He later returned as Regius Professor of Physiology there in 1928 and died in the city in 1935. Macleod provided lab space and guidance to Banting and Best in Toronto, earning a share of the 1923 Nobel Prize. A statue honors him in Aberdeen.

In 1922, a group of scientists went to the Toronto General Hospital where diabetic children were kept in wards, often 50 or more at a time. Most of them were comatose and dying from diabetic ketoacidosis. Others were being treated by being placed on an extremely strict diet, which inevitably led to starvation. This is known as one of medicine's most incredible moments. Imagine a room full of parents sitting at the bedside waiting for the inevitable death of their child. The scientists went from bed to bed and injected the children with a new purified extract: it was called insulin. As they began to inject the last comatose child, the first child injected began to awaken. Then one by one, all the children awoke from their diabetic comas. A room of death and gloom became a place of joy and hope. In the early 1920s Frederick Banting and Charles Best discovered insulin under the directorship of John Macleod at the University of Toronto. With the help of James Collip insulin was purified, making it available for the successful treatment of diabetes. In the same year, Banting, Collip, and Best decided to sell the insulin patent to the University of Toronto for $1. Banting and Macleod earned a Nobel Prize for their work in 1923. The earliest recorded description of diabetes symptoms appears in the Ebers Papyrus from ancient Egypt around 1550 BC, noting excessive urination. Ancient Indian and Chinese texts also mention it by the 5th-6th century BC. It was rare in antiquity—Galen saw only two cases in his lifetime. Diabetes became more common in the 20th century, especially type 2, due to lifestyle changes, with significant rises post-1950s.

That looks like a clip from the music video for "Lotus Flower" by Radiohead, featuring Thom Yorke's famous dance. The "Aphex Twin & Thom" title might refer to a fan mashup or Thom's admiration for Aphex Twin's electronic style. If it's a specific remix, could you share more details?

Be a cold hearted individual that didn't really feel for the Celtic support at the moment. Just 13 league titles from the last 14. Uunbeaten and top of the league this season, not even conceded a goal. Thoughts with them at this very difficult period in their history.

@ally_begg Any idea how much the flags cost? I feel this really makes an impact in so many ways on the night, makes the club attractive too. It was a great spectacle. Bravo Dons fans. Look at the recent Scottish home games in Europe and we kick the arse over other clubs for atmosphere.

@HitTheByline The attendance for Hearts home game against Dumbarton speaks volumes. Aberdeen a clear third by almost any metric you can look at. Except Twitter followers. Oh actually that horse, I just checked and they’ve 10% more too.

As a neutral on the matter, Aberdeen are the 3rd biggest side in Scotland and I don't think that this should be a debate, but that never stops Boyd and Sutton from doing so anyways. In terms of domestic trophies, it is close 🏆: - Aberdeen; 4 league titles, 8 Scottish Cups and 6 League Cups. - Hearts; 4 league titles, 8 Scottish Cups and 4 League Cups. However, Aberdeen are the only Scottish side to win 2 European titles, the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup in 1983, both under Sir Alex Ferguson. Aberdeen are also the only other team, besides Celtic to never have been relegated from the Scottish top flight. Also, as a side note, Hearts have won 1 major trophy and Aberdeen have won 2 major trophies in the last 15 years. So, it's not the best rebuttal by Kris Boyd...
The Warm-Up@WilliamHillSPFL

Kris Boyd sees only one clear contender as the ‘third biggest club in Scotland.’ Aberdeen? Hearts? Hibs? Time to find out... Do you agree? 📺 Out now on YouTube, 🎧 Now available on all major podcast platforms. #TheWarmUp #ScottishFootball #SPFL

@MiamiPDScanner @anon_opin Naa these people have you by the short and curlies on this thread. You come across as the distillation of why people dislike Americans so much: intellect delusion, insular and arrogant with a large sprinkling of not understanding how the world operates.

I know, right? We only work harder, sacrifice more, and take fewer days off because we’re too busy: Underwriting global security Propping up the global economy Funding your humanitarian programs Stabilizing regions your governments won’t touch And oh yeah—providing the military umbrella that lets you sip espresso while mocking the hand that keeps you safe. We don’t get “free” healthcare because we don’t live in a fantasy where someone else pays the bill. We don’t get paid to sit around because we’re the engine that keeps the world from collapsing. You enjoy your cozy social benefits precisely because we do the hard, ugly work that your country outsourced to us. So go ahead—laugh at “freedom” while hiding behind American satellites, American naval power, American tech, and American aid. We’ll keep carrying the weight. You’re welcome.

Americans don't understand that the rest of the world just laughs when they claim to be the country of 'freedom'. They get about 4 days off work a year, no maternity or sick leave, no free healthcare, democracy is owned by billionaires, you arent even free to cross a street.

@DandyDonSF Compared to other similar sized satellite cities, it more than punches above its weight - even still. You can clearly see the decline though, and that’s sad to see. Not as much cash now and house pricing is all to pot. It’s still nice though. Very little rain, sunny and cold.
