Paging Biblical Counselors: I was asked a difficult question today and would love to hear from you: What is ONE book you would recommend to someone considering getting seminary-level training in biblical counseling? Not asking for a textbook-level book with tons of pages, but something easy to read and inspiring.

@kyleworley @MBTS I have had the same experience. Not sure if you have the elective space but I just finished Dr. Whitney’s Biblical Spirituality seminar. Highly recommend - It was fantastic!

On campus this week @MBTS for a seminar on philosophical theology and here is what I am seeing: *Happy students - I am blown away by how happy the students seem to be here. They are engaged and energized. *Accessible faculty - I ran into multiple professors today just being with students. Talking with them, sitting with them. *Hospitality - @drandrewmking invited me to come train jiu jitsu with him this week, @KodyGibby ran into me and suggested lunch. This seems normal here. *Professors are interested in ideas - This might sound obvious, but I've been in three different seminaries and let me tell you: It's not. The professors at MBTS are interested in serious engagement with ideas. They are neither dismissive nor disinterested. If you are looking to jump into seminary education, take it from someone who has degrees from three other strong seminaries: Nobody is doing what MBTS is doing like they are doing it. They are operating at a different level right now. Dive in.

As things unfold in Iran, let us all pray for God's mercy in the potential escalation of this conflict, guidance for our leaders who govern us, and protection for the many saints and evangelical churches that have been planted and are prospering in the Middle East.

I would like to see the data. I think the argument could be made across the evangelical world that the models adopted over the last fifty years (Church Growth Model, Seeker-Sensitive, Attractional) have led to a sanctification gap across all age groups. Evangelism has been heavily emphasized, often to the detriment of discipleship.

What do you think? Is the data that Bradley points to right in concluding that student ministry has no real impact on long term faith persistence and therefore churches should fire their youth ministers. Is there a model of "youth ministry" that is biblical and effective?

He expressed concern to Lambert, true, but the method Lambert went about it, I'm not sure Powlison would have been comfortable. Additionally, I believe Brad Hambrick wrote of Powlison walking with him through a park (garden?) encouraging him in his work in Biblical counseling at SEBTS. So, if we trust and believe our brother Heath and trust and believe our brother Brad then claiming Powlison as the genesis of criticism against Hambrick and SEBTS makes no sense. Unless you think Hambrick lied.

David Powlison consistently modeled a gracious posture toward those he disagreed with. His endorsement of Eric Johnson’s 'Foundations for Soul Care: A Christian Psychology Proposal' is a compelling example: "Eric Johnson is resolutely fair-minded. He treats others as friends, with charity and respect. He seeks accurate understanding and takes no shortcuts. He takes others seriously, even when he disagrees. He earnestly pursues both truth and helpfulness. In other words, both in person and in print, he is after wisdom ('nothing else you could desire compares'). I count his friendship one of life's pleasures. Eric makes criticism easy to hear and makes vigorous argument in the pursuit of wisdom a delight!"

Appreciate your comment and the opportunity to ask for clarity. I don't think anyone's goal is to "go after" @travismcneely personally. I certainly hope that is not the case. The concern isn't about one footnote in isolation, but about accurate representation in scholarship. When a cited author clearly states that the view attributed to them isn't their own, it's fair and responsible to ask for clarification or correction. Doing so isn't hostility-it's part of maintaining academic integrity and mutual respect within theological dialogue. This isn’t a podcast or a X post, it’s an academic peer-reviewed journal. There is a retired Navy SEAL working on his PhD in BC at MBTS who famously told our seminar that presenting academic papers in person or professional journals is like going to an academic knife fight and you’re only as strong as your footnotes. (Or at least that’s how I heard it right before presenting lol). I have read the article and Travis makes several strong points and his defense of sufficiency of Scripture is well argued. If we were in a forum/seminar I would ask the following: you write “There are some within the biblical counseling movement suggesting that regenerate and unregenerate people might have a shared intellectual foundation when it applies to soul care because of common grace.[46] @BobKellemen has written that those claims are unfair and not an accurate representation of his views. Can you provide some clarification on the footnote and why you argue this accurately represents his views? Thank you. Thanks again for this opportunity and hopefully this will advance the conversation in a productive manner. Perhaps your association could host a forum where all the key players from the different camps could debate the argument. I’d reserve my ticket now!

Have any of you guys going after McNeely read his article? Have you asked him to clarify? Or are you reacting to a single footnote citing Kellemen on a single sentence 5 weeks after his article was published because Kellemen is objecting to it?

I know this has been stated many times before, but we should reserve the word heretic for those who have actually abandoned or actively teach against orthodoxy, not simply willy-nilly labeling those who disagree with us about secondary, tertiary, or (laughably) political issues.

Personal musings: 1. If G3’s Gloria Deo Journal of Theology is a professional peer reviewed journal then their ethics board must have approved the article. 2. Dr. Kellemen makes a serious academic accusation. It would be nice to hear from both G3 and Travis. Even if only to clarify the vetting process. Disclaimer: I have corresponded with Dr. Kellemen a few times in the past (last time ~Jan/Feb) and in addition to being my brother-in-Christ, I consider him a friend. Although, I haven’t met Travis (we were originally in the same Ecclesiology seminar and I was looking forward to meeting him but he was unable to make the on campus portion at the regularly scheduled time), I am sure he is a professional academician and I know he takes this seriously based on his professors and he is my brother-in-Christ. FWIW I was in the seminar when Chris wrote about the article on Dr. Hambrick’s website which had been compromised. The professor was insistent that it was the duty of the author to reach out to the other party via multiple channels to seek clarification and if silence then list ways attempts were made and no response receiver. This ultimately led Chris to retract that section and inform others of the facts.
