This is the oldest surviving book ever made in England. Created in north-east England around AD 700, the St Cuthbert Gospel is a tiny pocket-sized copy of the Gospel of John. Its survival is remarkable. When St Cuthbert was reburied in AD 698, the book was placed inside his coffin. It remained there for more than 400 years, protected from the outside world until the tomb was opened in 1104. Remarkably, its original red leather binding has survived almost perfectly, making it not only England's oldest surviving intact book, but also the oldest intact European book. The manuscript later became known as the Stonyhurst Gospel and was eventually acquired by the British Library in 2012. More than 1,300 years after its creation, it remains a direct link to the craftsmanship, faith and learning of Anglo-Saxon England. Follow @oaksandlions for your daily dose of England's hidden gems.

@JulianKalmeijer @Daily_Hotspur @Glongari Ok...so he can stay. Or the interested teams can swap us a player plus cash. "I want it but I can't afford it" isn't a good argument for not paying full price for something

@amadenjoyer21 @Daily_Hotspur @Glongari So should we just let him go for half price? He wants to go, we're planning for him to leave, but any team that wants him should pay his reasonable market value. If they don't want to pay up he can take a pay cut and waive his signing bonuses to help it along...

Labour plans to withhold benefits to people who have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain. Performative cruelty and total cowardice. That’s why the Greens will replace Labour.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Exclusive from @matt_dathan The Home Office has drawn up plans to relax immigration reforms in a bid to address the concerns of Labour MPs Under a compromise up to 1.6 million migrants could be granted indefinite leave to remain after five years instead of ten — but they would face waiting longer to qualify for benefits The group known as the Boriswave after the boom in immigration under Boris Johnson would be exempted from Mahmood's migration reforms but have to wait longer before accessing benefits such as UC, disability payments, council tax reduction, tax credits and state pension credits A source said: “What it boils down to is benefits. You would allow them to get ILR after five years but you don’t allow them to claim benefits until three or four years later.” They said “most people don’t come here so they can claim benefits”, but the idea that they can do so “as soon as they get ILR” was “politically damaging”. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

@jonburkeUK @SamaHoole So why put them on arable land? That is the issue. Licence solar farms for any brownfield site without planning requirements and leave farmland alone?

This month the Energy Secretary approved his third large solar farm in a fortnight, one of them on prime farmland across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire that his own inspectors told him to refuse. They walked the site. They said no. He signed it anyway. So here's the grand plan. Take some of the best food-growing soil in England, ground that has fed people for a thousand years, and bury it under glass panels shipped in from China to catch the famous Lincolnshire sunshine. In a country where the sun knocks off mid-afternoon for half the winter and turns up for roughly eleven per cent of the year, we are concreting over arable land to harvest photons that mostly aren't there. A British solar field spends most of its life doing an impression of a very expensive greenhouse with the plants missing. The panels tilt hopefully at a grey sky. The soil beneath them, some of the finest in the country, sits in the dark for forty years quietly learning to be a car park. And it doesn't come back. Not in your lifetime. They are making a permanent decision about a temporary energy fashion, on ground you cannot un-glass, against the written advice of the men they pay to give it, in the same fortnight the same government swears food security keeps it awake at night. Sunniest idea they've had all year.

You are Prime Minister. Do you: (a) Invest in unbelievably good research in areas like quantum, photonics and AI in the Harwell Campus with world class facilities like the Diamond Light Source. (b) Spend £2.5 billion subsidising fundamentally unprofitable steel making?

@cenkuygur 1) football teams don't have "rosters" 2) your 'best player' is an England reject who plays in a joke league 3) sportsmanship means playing by the rules of the game, not getting your megalomaniac dictator to overrun them 4) Belgium fucking smashed you despite it all

Here's what I'm not interested in - Belgium crying they have to play us with a full roster. They really want to play us without one of our best players. Wow, what great sportsmanship. I get it if others are pissed, but Belgium thinking it's unfair to play our whole team is weak.

London's One Undershaft skyscraper has been renamed One London. The supertall building is currently under construction and set to top out at the city’s aviation ceiling of 309.6-metres — the same height as the Shard, which is currently the UK’s tallest building. Designed by Eric Parry Architects, the 74-storey skyscraper is set to add some 117,000-square-metres of office space into the City of London, alongside a podium and new public garden that projects from the structure. 📷 DBOX / Eric Parry Architects

@CameronYardeJnr @pokeefe1 Exactly! Always baffled me, even if he genuinely couldn't give a shit about the football & only cared about the business, spending that little bit more to get the player we actually needed was the difference between champions league football and mid table, so worth millions!

@andyfay @pokeefe1 Hear, hear! That's why Levy will not get the credit he deserves because he let the football side fall away so badly. He never appreciated that a successful football team generates so much money. A few trophies would have kept fans onside too.

Spurs spending. 17th twice, survived by skin of their teeth. Cost implications of relegation 10 fold that of paying extra to get targets. Relegation would have been catastrophic. They have no choice. Levy's vision (although not aligned with success) ironically helping them now.

@CameronYardeJnr @pokeefe1 Mad thing is he didn't even have to be adventurous, just realistic. The amount of quality players we missed out on cos he fucked around over a million quid here or there is unreal. Could have built a generational team under Poch but ended up glorious failure and death spiral

@pokeefe1 The flip side is that had Levy been more adventurous and bought good players and built on THAT Poch team, relegation might not have been a possibility. But Spurs kept their financial house in order and followed the rules. Reaping the benefits now.

@bobyiddo Everton can do and make what they like off their stadium. Nobody's questioning your revenue, the problem is the rules that favour the same six clubs who built their revenues up before the drawbridge was pulled up and restricted any further competition from ambitious clubs.

@owenthfc__ Well a few things... 1) sell bentancur 2) it's not 1 game a week if we treat the cups seriously 3) injuries happen at an alarming rate in our club 4) different games require different players/formation So 5 for 2 (or 3) when all fit with 2 of those 5 being young & developing?

Love Lucas but that *if* we sign Fernandes & Tonali that would be a very bloated midfield on one game a week. - Sandro Tonali - Mateus Fernandes - Rodrigo Bentancur - Lucas Bergvall - Archie Gray - Conor Gallagher 6 players for 2 positions. Could get away with it in Europe but on one game a week that will soon get awkward. Even with another inevitable injury crisis it doesn't guarantee gametime for everyone. I know Gallagher will be a #10 until the likes of Maddison, Kulusevski & Simons are all 100% next year but even then, 5 is a lot. Don't think Bergvall or Gray will get the minutes they'll need to develop next season, unless Gray is utilised as a utility player again playing fullback on occasion.
Tottenham Tiers@TottenhamTiers

#Tottenham’s stance on Lucas Bergvall is that he is NOT for sale. Robert De Zerbi and Johan Lange are both understood to have held talks with the midfielder to assure him of his part in the club’s future. [@JPercyTelegraph] 🥇
