Mark Carney did not fire the budget watchdog because the law itself ended his contract. The narrative that a firing took place is factually false. As the Parliament of Canada Act clearly states in Section 79.1, an interim appointment is legally capped at exactly six months. Jason Jacques took the temporary role in September 2025 and his term expired by law on March 2 2026. You cannot fire someone for leaving a job they were legally required to vacate. This was a routine end of a temporary assignment, not a political dismissal. A permanent successor, Annette Ryan, is already undergoing her confirmation hearing today to ensure the office remains independent.
