I am concerned about families in my constituency and across Britain being exploited by heating oil suppliers breaking their contracts at this time of rising prices. The market is beset with bad practice at the best of times, but with events in the Middle East and Labour continuing to double down on their anti-North Sea oil and gas policies, the situation is critical. That’s why Conservative MPs and I have called on the CMA to open an investigation into the heating oil market. These households do not have a powerful lobby to speak for them and the CMA needs to ensure the law is enforced against predatory suppliers.

No. Labour inherited a lot of debt in July 2024 because of massive spending during the pandemic — which Labour supported, indeed it wanted more — and post-Ukraine invasion energy subsidies — which Labour supported, indeed it wanted more. The pandemic is no more and energy prices have been falling back. But still Labour has managed to increase debt/borrowing to record levels at a record pace when a prudent government would have started to reduce borrowing. Next question.

It is widely expected that UK’s Labour gov’t will “turn left” as a result of its leadership crisis. Yet in 18 months under Starmer & Reeves, public spending and borrowing have already escalated alarmingly. A left turn in economic policy will make public finances even worse!
