My latest article is out in @EnvSocio! "Toxic Freedom: How middle-class seasonal fruit pickers perceive & manage agrochemical exposures" shows how workers may downplay #pesticide exposure by framing it as a reasonable trade-off for freedom and adventure. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

@raulpacheco A few I would recommend: - Akram-Lodhi (2013) Hungry for Change - Jennifer Clapp on financialization/corporatization - Hannah Wittman & Annette Desmarais on food sovereignty - Julie Guthman on conventionalization (e.g., organic) - Bernstein on class: fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/class-dyn…

If I were looking for theories of agrarian change, which authors/theories should I be looking for? (I'm an urban scholar, folks - I am not really all that knowledgeable about agricultural change).

Really enjoyed this in-depth conversation on the @Animocracy podcast. PhD Candidate Tayler Zavitz and I chatted about our new study on ag-gag laws in Canada, whether shocking visuals are effective at promoting animal welfare, and more! podbean.com/media/share/pb…

My latest article with PhD Candidate Tayler Zavitz has been published open access in @CRS_RCS! We investigate the rise of “ag-gag” laws in Canada, which criminalize whistleblowers who engage in hidden-camera investigations of industrial agriculture. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ca…

On a more hopeful note, civil society resistance matters. Groups like @AnimalJustice have successfully pushed back against the adoption of ag-gag laws.

Biosecurity was the biggest justification for ag-gag laws, but Cdn whistleblowers have never spread zoonotic diseases in this manner. The very design of overcrowding in mainstream animal agriculture has led to outbreaks of infectious disease, as we're seeing with bird flu today.
