@DrZoeRSmith Let’s talk about this-This is my whole line of work, and it’s not a term I think should be disregarded. Yes, it’s not helpful for some communities in some contexts, but it’s not the same as grit and it’s not an individual trait/characteristic. It’s a process applying to systems.

This is part of why I hate the term resilience. Resilience asks people that are oppressed to “be strong” “show grit” which is very much the “pull yourself up from your bootstraps” White supremest capitalistic mentality. Do NOT blame individuals. Instead CHANGE the systems.

Our new theory paper in @ActaPsych shows that babies change how we see the world! In our lab, we use virtual environments to study parenting. We are finding that babies actively reshape our perception in ways that help protect them. Read more at sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

The Benevolent Childhood Experiences (the opposite of the ACEs) try to capture the positive things in a childhood that can enhance long term outcomes in mental health. Important to evaluate the good things that can happen in a child’s life rather than just the negatives.
