Marine CO2 removal (mCDR) requires that CO2 "removed" from seawater is replaced with atmospheric CO2 after an mCDR operation. This air-sea CO2 transfer can take a long time, in the worst case centuries. How can we provide confidence that the air-sea CO2 influx has occurred? 🧵

MRV for ocean CO₂ removal (CDR) is hard because CO₂ equilibration takes months to years and occurs over large ocean regions. @bach_lennart, Phil Boyd, @mtyka and I suggest a “risk assessment for incomplete CO₂ equilibration” as a pragmatic way forward. aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/lo…
