See the likeness? #georgiaokeeffe made a series of drawings of Katharine Du Pre Lumpkin as they walked for several weeks in North Carolina mountains in 1916. Lumpkin went on to be an important racial activist. She published her memoir, "The Making of a Southerner," in 1946.

O’Keeffe never piled on the paint. She worked wet-into-dry, pretty much a single layer of paint requiring serious control to choreograph her textural effects. Within this narrow range that she chose to work, her variations are virtuosic. Read more: mygeorgiaokeeffe.com/georgia-okeeff…
