There are a record 4.12m foreigners now living in Japan. Coming to Japan has worked out well for me: I have PR, a house, a family, and have achieved a decent level of wealth. But if making money is your goal, I’d go elsewhere than Japan at 160 yen/ USD www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ne…

@Brian5_8_1899 @ramprasad_c I think it's an economics problem: What level of curry smell will people endure, for an increased tax base? And if it further increases, will they happily tolerate even more of the smell? How far does this scale before it's unbearable or people start to die?

@ESRogs @signulll I'll read his mind. He meant a small clustering of countries (or maybe just 2: USA and Canada), that are several SDs less racist than all the rest.

america is one of very few countries that has even tried to build a multiethnic democracy at scale, & the fact that it has a visible, loud, ongoing discourse about racism is actually evidence of relatively low tolerance for it compared to countries where racial hierarchy is just... ambient & unremarked upon. japan (lol very obvious now), korea, much of europe, india's caste system, han chauvinism in china, ethnic dynamics across the gulf states.. most of these societies don't even have the vocabulary for the conversation america tortures itself over daily. america is quite literally is one of the least if not the least racist countries on the planet, & it's not even close.

@rieglobe The anonymity on twitter also allowed multiple personas. We had looked into this and found that avg active user in Japan had around 2.1 personas and heavy users had around 4 to 5. People customized their feed per each persona and it helped create bidirectional social graph.

The reason X/twitter won Japan is simple: Both twitter & facebook entered Japan in 2008. Facebook forced real names in a country raised on anonymous internet culture (2ch, Mixi). So Facebook became performative, basically LinkedIn. Twitter let you be pseudonymous. Cat/dog/anime profiles took over. So that’s where people were most authentic and ideas flowed.

@juliarturc It's better here in Japan. But what you describe was inevitable in the U.S. Massive investments and valuations will lead to that. In any field where lots of money gets moved around, inevitably the scum rises. Politics is the classic example.

Why so many of us feel career-homeless in tech: >Startups full of fraud, grifters and short-term thinking >FAANG full of politics and slightly behind >Frontier labs in a race with no morals >Academia full of title collectors >Content creation ridden by AI fakes and sensationalism Who is starting the renaissance and how do I get in touch with them?

@CacheThatCheque True! 😅 I'd like to think we've avoided becoming like an unhappy older Japanese couple, but wanting the fella out of the house is probably immutable!

Not sure how many would do it but coming to Japan in your 30s, 40s or 50s to work as an ALT perhaps wouldn’t be so horrible if you already have assets: you’d get a visa, something to do everyday without huge amounts of stress or responsibility, time off, and no money worries

@TechLayoffLover Here in Japan, companies only lay off people as a last resort when they’re in trouble. Boards do their to best balance the needs of shareholders, employees, and communities. In the US it’s about shareholders, period.

**ORACLE IS ABOUT TO MASSACRE 30,000 WORKERS WHILE LARRY ELLISON SITS ON $201 BILLION** The company just posted a 95% jump in net income to $6.13 billion Record fucking quarter And they're planning the largest layoff in Oracle's 47-year history Sources saying 18% of the entire global workforce is getting torched That's 30,000 human beings with mortgages and kids and car payments While Larry Ellison was literally the richest person on Earth for three weeks last September $393 billion net worth at the peak The man could lose $201 billion tomorrow and still have more money than 99.9% of humans will see in 1,000 lifetimes Oracle's "workforce optimization" (their actual words) comes down to one simple equation: $6.13 billion in quarterly profit ÷ 30,000 eliminated salaries = even more billions for shareholders The press release will say they're "streamlining operations to focus on cloud and AI capabilities" Translation: we're firing 30,000 people because we can replace them with software and nobody can stop us I'm hearing the cuts hit hardest in support, consulting, and mid-level engineering The exact people who built this company while Larry collected yachts If you're at Oracle right now, your badge might not work Monday morning

@Fly_LewisT @HMBrough_ Of course I can’t describe everyone. I’m assuming that is understood. Also, if you’re talking about posters on X, this site attracts the most vile people from any country. They’re not representative.

From what my partner tells me, Taiwan is basically the cool version of Japan: 1) Less stuffy locals (nobody will care if you walk while eating or talk on a train) 2) SLIGHTLY more xenophilic locals (if you’re brown this is important) 3) Way less touristy, but just as cheap and orderly 4) Tastier (albeit fattier) street food
Aruvin 💊@aruvinchan

I spent a week in Japan last year. Immediately I knew it wasn't a place for living. Too conformist, too stifling, too much policing from other people. You can't talk loudly, you can't go here, you can't do this, you can't do that. Fuck that shit.
