International Women’s Day 2026 Vascular surgery has long been one of the most male-dominated surgical specialties in Australasia. That’s changing. In 2026, 6 women & 3 men were selected into vascular surgery training across Aus & NZ. #IWD2026 #WomenInSurgery #VascularSurgery

The key message is prevention. Early review by a specialist vascular surgeon allows careful risk assessment, surveillance planning and (where appropriate) planned treatment. Early specialist input can turn an emergency into controlled care. #VascularSurgery #RuralHealth

When rupture occurs, bleeding is catastrophic. In rural centres, general surgeons are trained to perform emergency splenectomy — a life-saving operation when transfer isn’t possible. In specialist centres, vascular surgery services may also offer endovascular treatment.

A ruptured splenic artery aneurysm made headlines this week — rare, but rapidly life-threatening. Most visceral artery aneurysms are found incidentally and can be safely monitored. Very few rupture. abc.net.au/news/2026-02-0…

This blast from the past is an early iteration of the @ANZSVS Vascular Surgery Skills Course run in Waikato NZ for @RACSurgeons Trainees in 2004. This generation of trainees are now all senior vascular surgeons - running departments, leading research, and advocating for patients.
