anyway for my fellow dad book readers or aspiring dad book readers, if you want something that isn't US presidents, anicent rome, or world war ii, i recommend the entire William Dalrymple ouevre but especially THE ANARCHY

@devarbol W only got to the mid-20s with bloodier wars and the 2008 crash, I expect Trump will stay over 30 (granted expensive gas is probably more damaging than higher casualties)

This is a great picture because there are a bunch of subtle uniform variations that say something about the wearer, and then there's Patton

There's an interesting question of whether it would have been better for the British left in the postwar period or if right wing coalitions would still have been the natural government

I think the schoolbook version of the UK adopting PR in the interwar years would be another step down the road of incremental electoral reform like suffrage expansions; obviously the bitter leftie version would also be out there, though.

@yeselson IDK, like I said I'm pretty sure if the libs and cons had done this in 1929 history would remember it as stealing power from the insurgent labourites. Just a general matter the time to change a terrible system is not just as it stops benefitting you.

When I see white tie, my mind goes not to the maître d' (although, nothing wrong with that) but wonderful performers such as Cab Calloway and The Nicholas Brothers. And of course Fred Astaire. Look how wonderful and elegant these men look! The tailcoats add drama and movement.

I respectfully disagree. This sort of outfit can be beautiful, but it has to be done well. IMO, the problem with Vance's outfit — along with many others — is that the work has been influenced by fashion designers, rather than tailors. Let me show you. 🧵

there are unfathomable perks & opportunities to enrich oneself in politics but the downside is: sometimes, on state occasions, you have to wear a costume like this, maitre d' in a Monty Python fancy restaurant.

Sadly the statistics mostly track "newly-completed homes" but still.

I kind of randomly became a fan of Los Colchoneros because I happened to be in Madrid for the match. But now that I know the club is owned by an American private equity firm, I’m a fan for life.
