@apple58640 That’s fine. But no one is going to be at the games that don’t involve the home team. If the home team is upset in the first game, no one is going to be at the next game two days later. Which is the same problem everyone is complaining about with the current format.

I think we need to hear from *all* interests involved before making a major structural shift like this. The “loudest proponents” so far have been the coaches, players, media, and fans of schools that, historically, are likely to host 1st round games (at minimum). Makes sense. Much more affordable and convenient to play at home — for those schools and their fans. But what about the schools that would be “perennial” road teams? What about the fact that (depending on the structure) you could see the entire tournament last more than two weekends (as it is structured now). And since the spin on this is that home games provide a “more exciting” atmosphere, couldn’t we also make the argument that “scrapping” the NPI and letting humans determine things — so the matchups are “more exciting for TV” — be the next step?

I read it. That said, idea that 3-of-8 “higher seeds” are different annually doesn’t automatically justify that “campus games” are better for the tournament. Having 8 first round games at 8 different campus sites is a more expensive undertaking for ESPN. Having a 2-weekend travel itinerary for participating schools (as opposed to a single-weekend regional structure) is also a more expensive proposition — that could create “potential” logistical issues traveling coast-to-coast multiple weekends. David Carle’s job is to win hockey games at DU. His priority is making money for his athletic department. He gets incentive pay for winning tournament games (and winning championships results in lucrative contract extensions and job security). A decade ago there wasn’t a “transfer portal” or “NIL” — two things that will fundamentally change the game. It’ll likely change it in a way where the traditional powers in collegiate hockey become “more powerful.” This season, the four programs with “the most” national championships in college hockey will appear in the Frozen Four. Home sites will increase the likelihood that higher seeds win and move on. It’s simply the reality of the situation. It’ll make it difficult for fledgling programs to ever get a foothold (which is something this sport needs).
