Well, a lot of people don't seem to appreciate the significance of that statement from Datti Baba-Ahmed that Kwankwaso walks ahead of Obi, whereas he never did. It's a key statement—a power move. It suggests that Kwankwaso has bigger ambitions and is only working with Obi in 2027 as a pathway to achieving those ambitions. In the run-up to the 1993 presidential election, Babagana Kingibe came second to MKO Abiola in the SDP presidential primaries. Abiola reneged on his promise to pick Atiku as his running mate and instead chose Kingibe, who had come second—a politician many viewed as highly ambitious. To Abiola, it was a political strategy, much like what some argue Obi is attempting now with a politician as ambitious as Kwankwaso. After June 12 was annulled and Sani Abacha seized power in November 1993, Kingibe did not hesitate to accept an appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Abacha government. He would find himself in a similar controversy in 2007 after late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua appointed him Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). During the early stages of Yar'Adua's illness and treatment in Saudi Arabia, reports emerged that Kingibe was lobbying northern political elites and power brokers in anticipation that Yar'Adua might not survive. Upon his return from treatment, Yar'Adua quickly relieved him of his position as SGF. The point here is that Datti Baba-Ahmed's statement about Kwankwaso walking ahead of Obi is significant, especially to those who pay attention to body language and political symbolism. If you also recall, Kwankwaso recently issued a statement distancing himself from plans to protest against Tinubu's government and went on to suggest that the ballot box remains the only legitimate means of removing Tinubu. Such consequential and definitive statements would ordinarily be expected from the principal, Peter Obi, especially now that Kwankwaso has agreed to serve as his running mate. I keep referencing my visions that the 2027 presidential election could mirror some of the dynamics of June 12, and I am beginning to see what I consider early signs. I would not be surprised if Kwankwaso were to quickly accept the outcome of the election—even ahead of Obi—and congratulate Tinubu should the result be disputed, effectively closing the chapter on 2027 and positioning himself for 2031, which he may see as his own opportunity. From that perspective, any outcome that sees Atiku defeat Tinubu in 2027 could complicate Kwankwaso's path to 2031. Kwankwaso is using Obi as a vehicle to advance his political ambitions, but I believe that will become much clearer in the months and years ahead.

That’s why, after serving two full terms and 8 years as governor, it’s difficult to point to a single major political figure he personally built or mentored into prominence. In the end, it’s always been about his name and no one else’s. Contrast him with Atiku or Tinubu and you can understand why Datti Baba Ahmed said he joined Obi out of sympathy — as three (3) top politicians had already rejected him before then.
