There is a thin line between entertainment and destruction. I had the chance to talk to Jon Cohen, the author of Losing Big, about sports betting in the United States.
We talked about the history (the moral stigma, the legal penalties), the ads, the hen house and the foxes, the dopamine business model, the language of individual responsibility, and what comes next (unfortunately something much worse).
Gambling is weird because it's one of the oldest industries (because it's fun) but now it's integrated into state budgets, and we are depending citizen irrationality for some parts of revenue. Everyone is responding to incentives, all of the time. But the incentives are increasingly misaligned. Link in next post - and there is an audio version available. Enjoy!

Starting today, US hospitals are banned from reporting COVID data to the Centers for Disease Control.
Instead, they must report it to a no-bid, privately-contracted server under control of the Trump political apparatus.

One of those moments when I feel like I am living in the "Future". Discussion in the article is not about the technology nor the implications. That's too mundane. Instead, covers their annoying sound, the most important issue at hand. wsj.com/articles/deliv…

My reasons for optimism about Japan’s future: I think Tokyo can figure out how to do a San Francisco tech company substantially easier than San Francisco can figure out how to do a Tokyo literally anything else. twitter.com/pinboard/statu…

I spent two weeks traveling in Japan with my elderly mom, who has a little trouble with stairs. Every elevator at every subway station was functional. None of them smelled like urine. Each station had a working bathroom. I would like to see this in the Bay Area before I die.

Late to the game, but it seems like the fringe theory that 'Lead poisoning causes higher crime rates' is now getting more support.
