Recently travelled with family to Thailand as part of a tour group. At the end of the tour they asked us for suggestions/opinions/feedback. I kid you not the most common feedback was "we wanted more indian food and less Thai food" Me and my wife looked at each other and had the same thought. Why the F these folks ever leave India? In fact one of the nights we were there, wife and I skipped the dinner with the group because it was "Indian again" went out on our own and had some AMAZING Thai street food. When you tour a country, experience their culture, experience their food. If you want dal and chapathi stay in India!

India’s Foreign Tourism in a Freefall Amid Global Travel Boom a. Ministry Report: 12.3% drop in foreign tourist arrivals YoY (Q1-Q3 2025) b. Decline despite 6% weaker ₹ advantage c. Overseas Promotion Budget cut 97% to ₹3 cr FY25 Why is India Giving Up on its Biggest Asset: Foreign Tourist Arrivals: Ministry of Tourism Data a. 6.19 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) in 2025 (Jan-Sept) compared to 7.06 million in 2024 (Jan-Sept) – a decline of 12.3% in 2025. b. India’s foreign tourist arrivals peaked in 2019 at 7.67 million (Jan-Sept), and we never recovered that peak post-Covid. Compared to 2019, the decline in 2025 is 19.3%. c. The tourism minister said in Parliament that a decline in Bangladeshi tourists plus other global factors has led to this slump. d. Data is reported for Jan-Sept 2025 because the Ministry has yet to publish Q4 2025 figures. Maximum U.S. tourists (Indian diaspora) visit in December. That figure may show a bigger drop because non-citizens are reluctant to travel out of the US currently due to Trump visa threats. Global Tourism Booms as India Goes Into Decline a. Latest UN World Tourism Barometer data shows that international tourist arrivals grew 5% globally in Jan-Sept 2025, while Asia-Pacific grew 8%. b. Vietnam (smaller than Rajasthan) recorded a 21% increase in foreign tourist arrivals. Ethiopia saw a jump of 18%, South Africa reported 17% growth, and Sri Lanka & Mongolia both enjoyed a rise of 16% in foreign tourists. Brazil, another country very similar to India in profile made a world-record of 45% growth in foreign tourists in 2025. All of these destinations have surpassed 2019 (pre-Covid) levels, while India is down 20% from its 2019 peak. Outbound Tourists from India Contribute to Global Boom a. In the last few years, India’s foreign exchange earnings from international tourism have turned net negative. So, even in this industry we now have a current account deficit (exports minus imports). b. While foreign tourist arrivals are down, India’s outbound tourists to various foreign destinations increased from 23.2 million in 2024 (Jan-Sept) to 24.4 million in 2025 (Jan-Sept). That’s a jump of 5.3% YoY. c. Indian rupee weakened 6% in 2025, giving a direct cost advantage to foreigners (as they can buy more rupees for one dollar now). Yet, foreign tourist arrivals declined, while Indians traveling abroad increased despite an expensive dollar. d. When affluent Indians choose foreign destinations for tourism instead of Indian destinations, the local tourist economy loses, while the foreign tourist economy gains. Causes of Decline in India’s Foreign Tourist Inflow India’s infrastructure has vastly improved – airports, railway stations, direct flights and faster train networks, new highways, digital infrastructure, and hotels, Airbnbs, and other facilities. Then what is going wrong? a. In FY24, government allocated ₹1,692 cr for tourism schemes. This was cut down by half to ₹850 cr in FY25. In both FY24 and FY25, even this allocated amount was utilized (spent) only 50%. Most of it was spent on “Swadesh Darshan” schemes (domestic tourism). b. Overseas Tourism Promotion & Publicity: This budget under “Incredible India” campaign was reduced from ₹100 cr in FY24 to ₹3 cr in FY25. This budget has been successively reduced over the last few years. c. Foreign offices of India’s overseas promotion are closed. Many foreign tour operators have removed India from their travel brochures altogether. A recent EXIM Bank report flagged weak international tourism marketing as a major shortcoming for India. d. Other Asian countries have seized the opportunity with aggressive tourism promotions, competitive pricing, and minimal visa restrictions. India Has a Natural Competitive Advantage Over the World, But Zero Asset Utilization a. Mountains, Beaches, Deserts, Wildlife: Entire towns, districts, and even entire states (like Goa, Kashmir, Northeast states, Kerala, etc.) are a natural paradise on earth. b. Priceless Cultural and Historical Assets: An entire civilization and an ocean is named after India. If the West has Monalisa that attracts millions of tourists, India has vast monuments from Taj to Khajuraho to ancient Cave Paintings to South Indian temples, which are world-beating multi-trillion dollar assets. Tourism is one of the largest MSME-led employment generators in India. According to the tourism ministry, its share of national employment is now 13.34% (double of IT services exports sector). With the right vision and strategy, it could become India’s GDP growth engine. ENDQUOTE “₹3 cr for overseas tourism promotion is a joke and make no mistake, the joke is on us.” – Himanshu Dwivedi, Director of Monkfoot Travels @arabicatrader
