Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said officials are open to reviewing feedback on the Budget 2024 tax hikes: • Long-term capital gains tax raised to 12.5% • Short-term capital gains tax raised to 20% • Securities transaction tax also increased The problem? Markets have not taken it well. FPIs have reportedly pulled out over ₹2.65 lakh crore this year, their India stake is at a 14-year low, the rupee has hit around ₹95/$, and Nifty 50 is down over 10%. Investors are not just reacting to tax rates. They are reacting to policy uncertainty, currency pressure and weaker foreign appetite. A review is welcome, but the real question is timing. If the government waits until the Feb 2027 Budget, the signal may be too slow. India needs deep capital markets, patient investors and long-term savings participation. Tax policy should support that, not make India look expensive when global capital already has options.
