Hausa vernacular architecture demonstrates a sophisticated integration of climate responsiveness, material efficiency, and cultural expression. Its relevance in contemporary practice lies in its ability to inform sustainable, context-driven design approaches.

In contemporary practice, its relevance lies in how these principles are reinterpreted to shape modern spaces without losing their roots.

African interior design is defined by its ability to merge culture, material, and environment into a cohesive spatial experience. It moves beyond aesthetics, offering a design approach that is contextual, sustainable, and identity-driven.

Form gives a building identity. Function gives it purpose. It organizes space and responds to human need. At first glance, they appear to compete. But strip away the aesthetics, and both approaches resolve the same fundamental problem: how architecture serves people.

What once stood as order, openness, and intention has transformed into density, movement, and survival. This is not just about “then” and “now” it’s about how a city adapts, and redefines itself with every generation. Are we shaping the city… or is the city shaping us?

Two of you asked this same question under the comment. So, I'll explain and break it down. The proverb is "Ìjímèrè ṣọ́gigùn, kóo má baà gungi aládi." Meaning: Oh patas monkey, be careful of the trees you climb, lest you climb an "aládi" infested tree. This statement is used to someone who acts without discretion. It could be a man who sleeps with everything in skirt or someone who treats everyone they meet with disrespect, and so on. Now, the main question is: What is aládi and why should the patas monkey avoid a tree infested by it. Aládi is a small black ant that builds its nest on the stem of trees. Come rain, come shine, they're always there. That's because wherever they choose on the tree becomes their colony and they protect it really well. That's why another Yorùbá statement, often used in prayer goes "Tòjò tẹ̀ẹ̀rùn, ilé aládi kìí dá" which means "The aladi's nest will never be void of inhabitants at any time of year." So, last year, I tried to find the real English name if the insects, I came to the conclusion that it's black weaver ants (Oecophylla longinoda). Please note that I'm not 100% certain. But I can say that I'm 90% sure. This is because they're the only one I found that fit that description - small, black, aggressive, builds nest on trees. They're so aggressive that they're used to control other pests like coconut bugs. They are voracious predators, foraging on the ground as well as in the trees for insects and other arthropods, and co-operating with each other to tackle large prey. Now, you know why the patas monkey was issued that cautionary statement. Tainkyu 😊 #savenigerianlions

@Mr_JAGs @PeeGeeMax It is reinforced concrete. Yes, iron rods are in it, but because it is a composite structure, it is more difficult to get the iron in.

@b_olaji Yes, not everyone that studies it eventually practice it fully and yet it works for a lot of people. We won’t have architecture firms started and managed by architects if it’s not worth it.

@b_olaji What I was about to say. It is worth it at the end of the day, if you don’t get to fully practice it, it develops skills in you if you put your mind to learning.
