Quite so - I love Joshua Price* early 18C Conversion of St Paul Window adopted by Wren’s WW2 bombed but fabulous St Andrew–by-the-Wardrobe. New life in another sacred setting and publicly visible and appreciated. *Father of William Price/James Thornhill Great West window @wabbey

Most of the public open space in @cityoflondon is churchyard. The partnership between the churches and the Corporation maintains the sustainability, workability & liveability of the City. Accessible & open to all, unlike sky gardens.

St Andrew Undershaft churchyard has been transformed into a greener, more climate-resilient space 🌿 With flood-reducing paving, rainwater reuse 💧 and climate-smart planting 🌸, it’s a calm “green lung” in the Square Mile 🌳 Part of our Climate Action Strategy 🌍 @citylordmayor @GreenSqMile @sthelenschurch

Mrs M returns from the school trip they had for Y6 at the end of SATS week. “How was it?” quoth I “Awful. I had to ration the sick bags.” “Did the children enjoy seeing the animals?” “It’s Chessington World of Adventures!” “Isn’t that a zoo?”

Rebecca West describes the gardens of a Croatian castle: “the kind of grounds that were made in England during the 19th century…shrubby & expensive and futile; these sloped to the base of an extremely steep sugar-loaf Hill which had something like Bailliol on the top of it.”

My wife found these at an estate sale and asked if the boys would like them. So, I responded: “April – 1805. Napoleon is master of Europe. Only the British fleet stands before him. Oceans are now battlefields.” “Does that mean yes?” she asked. Me: OCEANS ARE NOW BATTLEFIELDS

@UrbanHermit15 @ludgatelarry You are right that it is more than one church; the successor parishes are Holy Sepulchre &S Barts the Great the incumbents of which for the time being are the owners of part of the ground each. Aldersgate is a Guild Church &the Guild Church Acts removed churchyards to parishes.

#Thursgate Two gates, both providing access to the same place. But where are they? Three gold stars if you can identify their location...

Across the UK, countless acts of kindness and care happen every day - but so often they go unseen. A Million Acts of Hope is about shining a light on those moments and celebrating the people helping their communities flourish. Because there is far more that connects us than divides us. millionactsofhope.org

This isn't all that unusual - Georgian church art (where it survives at all) is often systematically hidden by churches and cathedrals ashamed of anything that isn't Victorian or medieval and doesn't fit in with the Tractarian fantasies that still hold the Anglican mind captive
Janet Gough@Gough_Janet

For #AscensionDay let’s champion a return to public view for William Hogarth’s vast Ascension triptych - proof the English could rival the Continentals in grand-scale church history painting. Painted for St Mary Redcliffe, it now hangs hidden behind a curtain in St Nicholas, Bristol. Surely it deserves better?

Remarkably, on a wall in St. Oswald’s, Ashbourne, the original brass consecration plate of 1241 survives - in honour of St. Oswald (Oswaldi). It feels like a wormhole - as though the medieval world has briefly surfaced in the present - captured like a fly in amber.
