Imagine you’re a Palestinian, sitting outside your home, trying to find a moment of peace in a place your family has lived for generations. Suddenly, Israeli settlers appear, assaulting you, backed by the army. A scene that is hard to put into words.

Can I share something personal? About a year and a half ago, before I even had an account on X, I was already involved in the Palestinian cause in other ways. I found an organization that could send volunteers to the West Bank for a couple of weeks, helping Palestinians with small everyday things. For me it was also about witnessing things with my own eyes. To get there, I had to travel through Tel Aviv. I honestly thought there would be no issue. I had always been very low-key. I was wrong. When I landed, I was pulled aside for questioning, something that happens to many people. But what shocked me was what they brought up during the interview: a protest in front of the Israeli embassy in Norway. I had stood there for maybe fifteen minutes for only 1 time. That was it. Yet somehow they knew it was me. Out of everyone in that protest, they had identified me. Cameras, records, databases somewhere connecting a brief protest in Norway to a traveler arriving in Tel Aviv. It was surreal. That’s when you realize how closely these things are monitored by them. A few minutes at a protest, on a random day in another country, and somewhere your face is already logged and remembered. They didn’t let me in.
