Korean Blogger Exposes Artsakh Under Azerbaijani Occupation, Revealing Empty Cities, Tourist Scams & Erasure of Centuries of Indigenous Armenian Identity ➖➖➖ A Korean travel blogger has shared a rare recent video documenting his journey through Artsakh, offering one of the few firsthand looks into the region under Azerbaijani occupation following the 2023 ethnic cleansing of its indigenous Armenian population. Traveling through Shushi, Askeran, and Stepanakert, YoungMin Skies captures empty streets, damaged landmarks, and what he describes as a systematic effort to erase Armenian traces and reshape the identity of the occupied region. His trip into Artsakh was part of a group tour, after attempts to obtain an individual permit proved nearly impossible. Visitors were not allowed to leave the van at any point, and access to sites was strictly controlled, shaping the narrative presented during the visit. The blogger also drew personal parallels between his family history in North Korea and the Armenians who have been cut off from their historical lands, highlighting a shared experience of displacement and loss. He described his drive through largely deserted territory as haunting. Upon reaching Stepanakert, the former capital, his first impressions were stark: “Tragedy, sadness. Everywhere you go, it’s just empty houses.” At the city’s entrance, he noted the heavy presence of Azerbaijani state symbols, including flags and music blasting through the streets. “Not enough Azerbaijani flags and blasting Azeri music. I get it, we’re in Azerbaijan,” he said. The blogger highlighted widespread abandonment and damage across the city. Many Armenian landmarks had been destroyed, remodeled, or repurposed. Yet the iconic “We Are Our Mountains” monument, also known as “Grandma and Grandpa,” remained intact. He interpreted this as a political decision: although the authorities appear intent on erasing Armenian heritage, the monument was left as a carefully controlled symbol to show that the government dictates which elements of the past are allowed to remain. “It is the only Armenian symbol standing here, because the government says it stays, despite wanting everything Armenian to be gone,” he said. Repeated requests to visit Armenian cultural and religious landmarks were blocked or redirected. Notably, he was denied proper access to the Holy Mother of God Cathedral in Stepanakert, one of the city’s most significant religious and cultural sites. “I wanted to see the main cultural icon here, which is the church, but they kept shutting us down… which made me suspicious about what they’re doing to it,” he said. According to the blogger, the group repeatedly asked to be shown more about Armenian history in the region, but they were repeatedly told they were running late. Ultimately, they were not shown much and received little information about the Armenian presence that once shaped the city. He also documented the destruction of former Armenian government and educational buildings. The former Artsakh parliament had reportedly been demolished and replaced with a “victory park,” while Artsakh State University had been renamed and remodeled after the war to reflect a new identity. “It is completely unrecognizable,” he said, reflecting on the city’s cultural and administrative landmarks. Throughout the visit, the tour consistently emphasized Azerbaijani narratives, leaving little room for independent exploration. By the end, the blogger said frustration had set in. “Stepanakert was supposed to be the highlight… but instead, we did not step foot in the city. The controlled narrative was getting tiresome.” Beyond the tours and cultural restrictions, the blogger also reported being scammed by local hotels. He described poor service, hidden charges, and deceptive practices, estimating that the incidents cost him around $2,400 in total damages. He also noted the stark contrast between the region’s display of oil wealth and the lack of real substance beneath the carefully curated image. The video is one of the rare recent firsthand accounts from an outside traveler, sharing footage and observations from Artsakh. It shows a region undergoing heavy transformation, where Armenian cultural traces are being systematically erased and the region’s identity is being tightly controlled and reshaped.

Sev Ohanian’s “Sinners” Wins Four Oscars at the 2026 Academy Awards 🇦🇲🏆 ➖➖➖ Armenian-American producer Sev Ohanian’s film “Sinners” won four Academy Awards at the 2026 Oscars, marking a major moment for the record-breaking film that entered the ceremony with the most nominations in Academy Awards history. “Beyond proud of Ryan, Ludwig, Michael and Autumn for their wins in this historic night! Will never forget these past few hours celebrating our film. Our musical performance alone… having a moment like that at the Academy Awards is like living out a dream I never knew I had,” Sev Ohanian told Zartonk Media. The film took home Oscars for Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan), Best Original Screenplay (Ryan Coogler), Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson), and Best Cinematography (Autumn Durald Arkapaw). Produced by Sev Ohanian, Ryan Coogler, and Zinzi Coogler, “Sinners” set an Academy Awards record earlier this year after earning 16 Oscar nominations, surpassing the previous record of 14 nominations held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” Ohanian also made history as the first Armenian-American ever nominated for Best Picture as a producer of the film. The milestone marked a defining moment for Armenian representation in global cinema and made Ohanian only the second Armenian ever nominated in the category, following British-Armenian producer Tanya Seghatchian, who received a nomination in 2022 for “The Power of the Dog.” “Sinners” has been one of the most celebrated films of the year, grossing approximately $368 million worldwide while earning widespread recognition across the awards season. Earlier in the awards season, the film also won the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, while composer Ludwig Göransson received the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for his work on the film. The recognition for “Sinners” comes amid a broader breakthrough year for Armenian representation in global cinema. At the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, Sean Baker’s “ANORA” made history as the first film featuring Armenian dialogue to win Academy Awards, ultimately securing five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. With four Academy Awards now added to its growing list of accolades, “Sinners” stands as one of the year’s most successful films, with Armenian-American producer Sev Ohanian playing a central role in one of the most remarkable awards-season runs in recent years.

🇷🇺🇦🇲 BREAKING: Russia offered 40 tons of humanitarian aid for Karabakh. Armenia said no. Zakharova: "Russia was among the first to send aid. Official Yerevan was not very glad about Russian assistance for some reason." 40 tons. Medicine. Food. Supplies. Refused. Why? Because Armenia is pivoting. Away from Russia. Toward the West. Toward NATO. Toward the same powers that did nothing during the 2020 war. That watched Armenians die in Artsakh. That stayed silent while the ethnic cleansing happened. Now the West promises. The West delivers speeches. Russia delivers trucks. Yerevan chose. The people will remember. History will judge. 40 tons refused. The message is clear. The cost will be paid. Not by the politicians. By the people. As always.

Apparently the #UFC is about Dana White’s favorite fighter not about who is the best fighter. Blatantly bias and corrupt. The moment @danawhite did a hosting deal with Azerbaijan last year, Arman got blacklisted from becoming champ. Coincidence or part of the deal?

Pashinyan continues to sell out Armenia! Pashinyan’s government is now handing over a major construction project of the Zanzibar corridor to Turkish company Limak for the next 40-years, which will give up control of Armenia’s strategic mountain passages. This is a blatant selling out of sovereignty to a historic enemy for empty promises.
Truth_teller 🇷🇺@Truthtellerftm

Pashinyan continues to sell out Armenia. He is now thinking of giving away 1,200 sq km of Armenian land to Azerbaijan and border strips to Turkey. He calls it a "peace deal." Is this what Armenians voted for?

The price of gas has gone up $0.47 and the price of diesel has gone up $0.83 in 10 days due to War with Iran. and waging war costs American taxpayers about $1 billion per day, which comes out to $10 per family per day, or $100 since the war began. This isn’t America First.

BREAKING: Leaked emails (see below) reveal London-based PR firm - with deep ties to Azerbaijan - secretly pitching hit-pieces against the Armenian American community - targeting the ANCA. Full text of ANCA Executive Director Aram Suren Hamparian's op/ed: A Look Behind the Curtain of Anti-Armenian PR By Aram Suren Hamparian A March 2, 2026, email, secretly circulated by a London-based public relations firm with documented ties to Azerbaijan and its Caspian Sea petroleum partners, offers a revealing window into how enemies of Armenia seek to inject malicious anti-Armenian narratives into the U.S. media mainstream. A scripted hit-piece against the ANCA sent in stealth to American journalists – a blueprint for slander, enlisting the anonymous backing of Armenians from Garo Paylan to Maria Karapetyan, MP – to punish the ANCA, not for our vices but for our virtues. Assaulted for standing foursquare for the security of Armenia, the return of Armenians to Artsakh, the end of Azerbaijani occupation, the protection of Christian holy sites, and – perhaps most “unforgivable” of all for Baku and its BP patrons – accountability for Azerbaijan’s crimes against the Armenian people. The ANCA operates in the sunshine – as we have for more than a century and a quarter – in the public arena, petitioning our government consistent with our Constitutional rights. It is this PR firm – Apollo Strategic Communications, and its parent company, RSK Group (with its deep connections to Azerbaijan)–that is operating in the shadows, orchestrating defamation by sending around secret emails and suborning off-the-record libels. Sadly, this is nothing new. The ANCA has weathered far worse. We have long endured ad hominem attacks by Aliyev-aligned interests seeking to somehow deprive Americans of Armenian heritage of our voice in U.S. civic discourse. Not by engaging with our arguments or challenging our evidence, but by smear campaigns run from the darkest corners of the amoral pay-for-play PR landscape – given voice by cleverly orchestrated but anonymous sources operating off-the-record. Why are they targeting the ANCA? That’s simple. Because we are effective. Respected. Because they’re intent on silencing the Armenian Diaspora, leaving Armenia abandoned and alone – at the mercy of Turkey and Azerbaijan. That’s a Turkic aim, not an Armenian one. The fact that this is a foreign attack – from the shadows – against an American organization – operating in the light – tells you everything you need to know. The ANCA publicly shares our work – enlisting our community via open calls to activism, press releases, and national townhall meetings. Apollo’s involvement, by contrast, would have remained entirely unknown had their emails not been leaked. All that remains is for Apollo now to reveal who exactly is paying for this anti-ANCA defamation – the terms of any contracts, and the dollar amounts involved. Shadowy attacks on the ANCA strengthen the ANCA – because they underscore, for Armenian Americans and U.S. policy stakeholders, the vital role we play in courageously giving voice to the interests and aspirations of a community, now over two-million strong, that has contributed so richly in so many ways to our U.S. democracy and our American society. ##### armenianweekly.com/2026/03/03/ant…

A review of recently leaked emails targeting the ANCA raises legal questions about the compliance of Apollo Strategic Communications, a UK-based PR firm (owned by UK-based RSK Group), with the U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act – 22 U.S.C. § 611 et seq. – in connection with potentially unregistered political and public relations work, done either on their own behalf or at the direction of one or more (as of yet unidentified) foreign principals. Yet another despicable and unjust sentencing of an Artsakh Armenian by the Aliyev regime that shows their contempt for international law and human rights.    Every Armenian prisoner captured during Azerbaijan's ethnic cleansing of Artsakh, including Mr. Vardanyan, must be released immediately. @StateDept must work harder to ensure their freedom.
Ruben Vardanyan@RubenVardanyan_

Statement by Ruben Vardanyan’s Legal Team On February 17, the military court in Baku sentenced Ruben Vardanyan to 20 years of imprisonment. This verdict was not the product of an independent and impartial judicial process. It was the foreseeable outcome of proceedings driven by political considerations and fundamentally incompatible with the standards of a fair trial. As his legal representatives, we state unequivocally that this conviction is legally unsustainable. From the outset, the proceedings were marred by serious and systemic violations of both Azerbaijan’s domestic law and its binding international obligations. The tribunal failed to meet the requirements of independence and impartiality guaranteed under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights. The presumption of innocence was compromised by the framing and substance of the charges. The defense was denied meaningful access to the case file, afforded grossly inadequate time to examine extensive materials, and repeatedly obstructed in submitting motions and presenting exculpatory evidence. Mr. Vardanyan was not granted full and independent access to legal counsel of his own choosing. These violations were not procedural irregularities; they directly deprived him of his fundamental right to prepare and present an effective defense. The adversarial character of the proceedings was effectively dismantled. Mr. Vardanyan was not provided a genuine opportunity to contest the charges before a competent, independent, and impartial tribunal. In such circumstances, the integrity of the verdict cannot be maintained. The nature of the charges further underscores the political character of the prosecution. Mr. Vardanyan has been held criminally liable not on the basis of individualized conduct established beyond reasonable doubt, but for political engagement and public service associated with Artsakh / Nagorno Kharabakh institutions. Contemporary criminal law, whether domestic or international, does not permit the criminalization of identity, political affiliation, or participation in governance structures absent specific and proven criminal acts. The cumulative effect of these violations leads to one unavoidable conclusion: Ruben Vardanyan was denied a fair trial in any meaningful sense of that term. His conviction reflects a broader pattern affecting ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh and raises profound concerns for the rule of law. Therefore, this trial, like the recently concluded trial against the other fifteen Armenians, is unlawful. We call upon international organizations, human rights mechanisms, and responsible governments to take immediate and concrete steps to protect the rights of Mr. Vardanyan and the other Armenians unlawfully convicted and held in Baku, and to secure their release. The normalization of politically motivated prosecutions threatens not only the individuals concerned but the credibility of the international legal order itself. Ruben Vardanyan chose Artsakh over comfort. He stood with his people in their darkest hour and did not leave when it became dangerous. Today he sits in a Baku prison for that choice, his freedom temporarily taken, his principles intact.

I have just learned that my long-time friend and partner in philanthropy, Ruben Vardanyan, wrongly imprisoned for his advocacy of Armenian sovereignty and safety in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh), has received a prison sentence of 20 years from his captors in Azerbaijan. This is a travesty. It is ludicrous. Those around the world who believe in peace and justice, in decency and fairness, must continue fighting for his release, as I will do. Ruben’s family said it best: this judgment is a judgment against the Armenian people as a whole.
Ruben Vardanyan@RubenVardanyan_

Statement by the Family of Ruben Vardanyan Today we learned that Ruben Vardanyan – a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather – has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. The verdict by a military court in Azerbaijan is devastating, though not unexpected. From the moment of his arbitrary detention 874 days ago, it became evident that the outcome of this process had been predetermined. Throughout this period, Ruben was denied fundamental guarantees of due process, including meaningful access to legal defense, contact with his international counsel, and the ability of independent media to attend the proceedings. The hearings were held behind closed doors and in conditions incompatible with the standards of a fair trial under international law and even Azerbaijani laws. Despite attempts to discredit Ruben’s reputation as a humanitarian, philanthropist, and social entrepreneur, the support expressed by governments, civil society leaders, and international observers has provided strength and hope to our family. This is not merely a trial of Ruben Vardanyan and the other Armenian detainees; it is seen as a judgment against the Armenian people as a whole. We will continue our efforts to secure his release and the release of all Armenian detainees held on politically motivated grounds, and we call on international leaders to take all appropriate measures, consistent with international law, to ensure their freedom and protect their rights.

Armenian Pair Skates To “Artsakh,” Qualifies For Winter Olympics Finals 🇦🇲 ➖➖➖ Karina Akopova and Nikita Rakhmanin skated Armenia’s pairs short program to Ara Gevorgyan’s “Artsakh” on February 15 at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, earning 66.27 points to advance into the top 16 and qualify for the finals. With 38.66 awarded for technical elements and 28.11 for difficulty, the Armenian pair secured qualification for the finals and at least a 16th-place finish in a field of 19 pairs. Azerbaijan’s National Olympic Committee had protested the use of the title “Artsakh” in Olympic competition, labeling it “political” and “separatist.” While the official Olympic program listing removed the name, the music itself was still played in full during the performance. Akopova and Rakhmanin, Armenia’s first pair figure skaters to qualify for the Olympics since independence, previously announced they would skate to “Artsakh,” a composition by Armenian composer Ara Gevorgyan from his 1999 album Ani. The duo is set to compete in the free skate on February 16. 🎥 Figure Skating Federation of Armenia
