SB 364 prohibits a parent or legal guardian to sign a waiver allowing school district personnel to administer corporal punishment on ANY student identified with a disability. Corporal punishment in schools is a currently a parent opt in policy if this type of discipline is offered at the school. My debate was simply this: regardless of a child’s special needs, parents, NOT government, know best how to discipline their child. SB364 will sever the authority of parents to collaborate with their school to administer discipline as the parents sees fit. The balance of discipline in the classroom is being challenged because of so many improper allowances of IEPs to children for behavioral problems. We should have a conversation on the prevalence of improper diagnoses of IEPs which disrupt teachers’ ability to maintain an environment conducive to educating our children. What my fifteen colleagues and I were trying to highlight in our debate against SB 364 is that parents should be able to opt in as they see fit to corporal punishment consistent with state statute and school policy. No one is arguing for children to be “beaten” in schools. This is ridiculous nonsensical hyperbole. Lack of uniform disciplinary standards in the classroom is a great disrupter for student and a discouragement for our teachers. @SenShaneJettOK @oksenate @OKFreedomCaucus
