@kevvwill Agree on both counts. Personally, I see huge value in keeping him as a rotation option / sub and as a pseudo-training ground coach - assuming Flick remains. Find another striker to start, and use the season to seriously think about the long term positions for Lamine, among others

@arduckling I don't even think classic 9s exist any longer, much less ones such as Lewandowski. What they decide with him will be interesting. Personally, I think a 9 is a vastly higher priority than a CB.

@kevvwill The other point I was trying to make is that the next signing has a good chance of being more like Ferran / Alcacer than Lewandowski. Stats aren’t everything, but a striker even without stats is beyond defense.

@kevvwill Sure, his decline has been clear and it’s no suggestion that he should be our starter in an ideal world and certainly not for next season. Still, he’s better (and more efficient) upfront than Ferran and Rashford, so for now, he’s still the best option.

It’s a risk to try and accept that you will win these games 3-2, as opposed to 1-0, but I almost guarantee whoever comes next will lead to a worse FC Barcelona, that is just as inconsistent in Europe and weaker domestically.

A Barcelona that is less aggressive in the press and the high line is not regaining possession in such important areas, and anyone who watches regularly will know that a high press also stifles Barcelona significantly, such that the build up is often laboured and ineffective

I don’t disagree with the idea, but this being a take the day after 10 man Barcelona concede 0.5 xG in a knockout game is a bit silly.
Also a bit silly is how overlooked it is that Barcelona has scored 300+ goals under Flick. The system works.

El Barça le tuvo que meter 5 goles al Dortmund, el año pasado, para eliminarle en cuartos. Le hizo 6 al Inter y no le alcanzó. Le ha metido 3 al Atleti este año en Copa y tampoco ha sido suficiente. Parten, en la mayoría de eliminatorias, con un déficit enorme, derivado del alto riesgo defensivo que asumen. Solo con una gran efectividad (como en la vuelta con el Newcastle) puedes sobrevivir en eliminatorias de este calibre. Pero es muy difícil mantener esa eficacia en varias rondas seguidas. Mas aún si te enfrentas a equipos de altísimo nivel, que saben defender. En la Copa de Europa, salvo contadas excepciones, es más rentable ser fiable atrás que adelante. Solo hay que analizar a los campeones para comprobarlo. No es una ecuación matemática, afortunadamente, y puedes ser campeón concediendo muchos goles, pero es algo poco frecuente. El Barça está intentando hacerse multimillonario, por la vía rápida, logrando 5 plenos seguidos en la ruleta, pero hay formas más eficaces de intentarlo, sin necesidad de poner en juego todo tu patrimonio.

@kevvwill @RuriBarlow It turned into an inquest on the player in that position, making those decisions, which happened to be Araujo. Henry did not make any other comments about prior events or about his individual skills, so I’m not sure why there’s a thought he is picking on him.

@arduckling @RuriBarlow And yet it turned into an inquest on Araujo, right? For the exact reasons I have laid out. It's easy. Nobody will take stick for saying Araujo screwed up. Low hanging fruit.

There's no malice in Henry here, but maybe doing a full section on the guy that's two months back from a mental health break after severe criticism... Point out mistakes sure, but there are smarter directions to go.

To go back again to what Henry actually said, he said Barcelona don’t defend well enough, and called out the poor communication of the covering players.

@RuriBarlow @arduckling Araujo is easy, and an easy target. Everyone talks about him like he is the worst defender in the history of the club, maybe even the game. So that stuff gets picked up from the whisperstream. When someone is always the culprit, you look for the reason that they are again.

@kevvwill @RuriBarlow Of course, the point wasn’t about being predetermined in reaching a conclusion in which Araujo and only Araujo is at fault, no matter what. It’s about there being reasonable criticisms and pressures at a club like Barcelona, especially as the club captain.

@arduckling @RuriBarlow I don't have a player who fills me with dread, though I do have a list of players who I don't think are up to the necessary standard. Araujo is on it, with many of most people's faves. But they are there, so watch them play the matches absent any baggage. More fun that way.

@kevvwill @RuriBarlow Sure, he can be excellent on his day, but he fills me with the same dread that seeing those others does, because you know just like they (MR, JC) will be lazy in the press, not track back and go to sleep, he will invariably do something wrong as well. (3/3)

@espanafan For sure, they were lucky there were not more like it as well, easily two or three cases where Newcastle delayed the cross in too long, or simply executed poorly. Almost none of those were on Araujo either.
