People talk so absolutely about this without having ever actually experienced living somewhere and being a part of their lives. My community took me in with warmth and kindness. My AP would teach me 日本語 in the library. The tempura restaurant waitress gave me freebies.

@DrFleshdog @delmoi not sure if this is true. they are actively denying long term residents their visa renewals because the system is not standardized. im not saying individual japanese people are bad. im saying their government/orgs is still anti-foreigner and it trickles down to the public

@delmoi As the grandchild of immigrants I'm not saying it never has been or never will be. Just pointing out that at this exact moment in time, criticizing them for the way they're treating foreigners is gauche. We are treating longtime residents worse than they treat... anyone.

I love Japan, but this is pretty true. Even my Japanese ex said that his very own friends would look down on foreigners and make fun of them... Was a pretty chilling revelation to hear. Obv not all are like that, but it's there and you can see it in many different ways.
