“The goal of psychological, as of biological, development is self-realization, or #individuation. But since man knows himself only as an #ego, and the self, as a totality, is indescribable and indistinguishable from a God-image, self-realization—to put it in religious or metaphysical terms—amounts to God’s incarnation. That is already expressed in the fact that Christ is the son of God. And because individuation is an heroic and often tragic task, the most difficult of all, it involves suffering, a passion of the ego: the ordinary, empirical man we once were is burdened with the fate of losing himself in a greater dimension and being robbed of his fancied freedom of will. The self is no mere concept or logical postulate; it is a psychic reality, only part of it #conscious, while for the rest it embraces the life of the #unconscious and is therefore inconceivable except in the form of symbols. The drama of the #archetypal life of Christ describes in symbolic images the events in the conscious life—as well as in the life that transcends #consciousness—of a man who has been transformed by his higher #destiny.” ⁸ Cf. Much commotion about this new Anthropic paper, and it's legitimately interesting work. But they are playing coy with quasi-philosophical claims that are not justified by the results. By framing the results in the language of "access consciousness," Anthropic is, deliberately or otherwise, throwing more mud into already muddy waters, inviting an inference the data cannot support but that people will draw, and already are drawing. As Anthropic themselves concede, this does not speak to whether LLMs might have phenomenal consciousness, the "something it's like" of experience. Frankly, neither does the original GWT it's modeled on. This has been the source of enormous confusion for decades. Reportability and deliberate reasoning are behaviors that are co-extensive with phenomenal experience in humans, but they do not entail phenomenology. In fact, as I've argued elsewhere, the success of LLMs drives a hard wedge between these two things. Linguistic report turns out to be a self-contained generative process that can run in full, workspace and all, without any sensory grounding whatsoever. This suggests that consciousness-adjacent language is possible without conscious experience. If anything, this paper strengthens the case that reportability and phenomenal experience come apart. Good science. Really good marketing. Bad philosophy.

We don't often think of the brain serving any role other than the leader in whole body communication. But the human body is an information-exchanging system that is largely decentralized. Signaling dynamics should always be considered in the greater context of the whole. Just as forests are missed for trees, we often miss the orchestra of human physiology for the individual instruments and players that are the organs.

Slowing down is a precious life skill. Being in the moment is the place to be to maximize efficiency. I recently learnt this through a difficult life experience. Every day — every breath, in fact — is an opportunity to slow down.

Why regret? I addressed this issue in link.springer.com/article/10.100… thoughtforms.life/some-free-vers… and in a few talks over the years where I floated the conjecture that anything that evolves under constraints of time and energy will believe in free will, because it will be constrained to tell coarse-grained stories (models) of agents doing things, and eventually turn that on itself, in effect saying "wait, I'm an agent that does things too!". An agentic perspective is guaranteed by evolution in limiting environments.
