What was wrong with Trump's remark ? By Justice Katju A big hue and cry is going on in India over US President Trump's remark " a baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hell hole on the planet " The Indian government has criticised Trump's statement as being 'uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste' indicanews.com/india-slams-pr… google.com/url?sa=t&sourc… google.com/url?sa=t&sourc… The main opposition party in India, the Congress, has called Trump's statement " extremely insulting and anti-Indian, and hurtful to every Indian" google.com/url?sa=t&sourc… The objection is obviously to calling India a 'hell hole' But what is wrong in that description ? I am presently in one hell hole called Bangalore, having come here for a couple of days from another hell hole called Delhi. I have also been to other hell holes like Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow etc The air pollution, the nightmarish traffic jams, the congestion in cities, the mounds of garbage lying everywhere on the streets, the polluted rivers, polluted food and water ( which cause various diseases), the water logging on the streets during the monsoon rains, the widespread corruption at every level etc, which make life unbearable for the common man and woman, surely justify calling India a hell hole. And this is apart from the massive poverty and unemployment in India, the appalling level of child malnutrition ( every second child in India is malnourished, according to Global Hunger Index, and the situation is getting worse ), almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for our masses, etc. No doubt Indians can feel proud over the great achievements of our ancestors google.com/url?sa=t&sourc… But we have to see our situation today, and not keep gloating over the past. And the truth is that today India is indeed a hell hole So why criticise Trump for speaking the truth, ? One may criticise him on other issues, but here he is spot on

Delhi’s pollution crisis is of course air but more importantly bad governance. An RTI reveals that the spent only 43% of the environmental damage compensation (EDC) it collected over the last decade (₹68 cr of ₹158 cr). This is money specifically meant to fix pollution damage. Even more worrying:
• No transparency on where the money was spent.
• In recent years, collections are rising, but utilisation is lagging.
• Similar pattern at (only 31% used). What needs to change⬇️ * Public dashboards
Real-time disclosure of EDC collection & project wise spending. No more RTIs just to get basic data. * Ring fenced funds
EDC must be legally tied to pollution mitigation (air monitoring, dust control, waste treatment); not left idle or diverted. * Time bound utilisation rules
Unspent funds beyond 12–18 months should trigger automatic allocation to priority pollution hotspots. * Independent audits
Annual third party audits & social audits to track outcomes, not just expenditures. * Outcome based spending
Link fund usage to measurable improvements; PM2.5 reduction, waste processing capacity, emissions compliance. * Citizen oversight
Make project data accessible so researchers, RWAs, and civil society can track impact. Delhi can’t afford to sit on pollution funds while air quality worsens. If we’re serious about clean air, every rupee collected for environmental damage must be used transparently and effectively💙 @gupta_rekha @mssirsa @LtGovDelhi @CAQM_Official

With rampant deforestation , this is bound to occur in many, many Indian regions. Indians need to prepare for the repercussions of natures wrath. You reap what you sow. Our leaders are throughly compromised, whether by builder lobbies or mining barons. Like colonisers, they will steal the wealth of the land and will move to places like Switzerland. And no, not all 1.4 B can up and leave. This is your habitat, your home. Stop them from destroying it before it’s too late.

Supreme Court : Destroy 120 Acre Dwarka Forest in Delhi. Delhi Govt. Silent @gupta_rekha Central Govt. Silent @moefcc Politicians Silent @byadavbjp Delhi Citizens Silent @LtGovDelhi Delhites > Heatwave is Okay Pollution is Okay @CMODelhi
Ajay Joe@joedelhi

Celebrating a fake #WorldEarthDay A few days back, I lost a case in Supreme Court as a petitioner — fighting for past few yrs to save a forest. Supreme Court Order : Cut down 120 acre forest in heart of Delhi. Following will die : 1. 25000+ Trees 2. Peacocks (National Bird of India) 3. 50+ Nilgai (protected under the wildlife act) 4. Monitor Lizards (protected under the wildlife act) 5. Snakes (protected under the wildlife act) 6. 65 species of Birds (both Indian and foreign species) 7. Water bodies > NGT says yes save the forest. > But Supreme Court Cut it down > SC exclaims on this logic that the land didn't have a forest cover before and this natural forest grew on its own OMG .... > The forest grew and then the animals came and made it their home. But SC says it's not worthy of being called a "forest". > From this logic, the humans came into existence much later than the forests and animals in the world. > So who has the right to exist first!? > At a time when Delhi’s air quality is choking its people and heatwave is killing people, especially the poorest, the apex court seems to have turned a blind eye to public welfare. They don't really care about us. That's the unfortunate reality. ✓ So almost everyone is fake when it comes to saving the planet. Read More : frontline.thehindu.com/the-nation/dwa…

A serious water crisis is unfolding in forest areas around Pune, where nearly 50 water sources, including 32 natural waterholes and 18 artificial tanks, have dried up. This has left wildlife like deer, wild boar, peacocks and birds struggling for survival during peak summer. Officials say tanker supply has started in some areas, but delays in planning and approvals have slowed response. Experts warn that animals may now move towards nearby villages in search of water, increasing the risk of human-wildlife conflict. Environmentalists argue that this is a recurring issue and better long-term solutions like rainwater harvesting and habitat management are urgently needed. #Pune #WildlifeCrisis #ClimateImpact #Environment #Punetimesmirror

ICMR is raising concern about increasing obesity in India - calling it a “belly alarm.” Around 1 in 4 Indian adults (25%+) are overweight or obese, and the number is rising. This is driving lifestyle diseases like: Type 2 diabetes Hypertension Heart disease Fatty liver The problem is widespread - both urban and rural India, with rural areas now also seeing rising obesity alongside undernutrition. Despite years of: various diets fitness programs awareness campaigns there is no clear consensus on what works best. So, ICMR has launched a national initiative to: study what actually works for weight loss compare diet, exercise, and behavioral interventions understand why some people respond and others don’t generate India-specific evidence Important shift: Weight alone is no longer a reliable marker Some normal-weight people have metabolic issues Some overweight people may not show immediate complications My Take. Here is the elephant in the room: Insulin resistance We are still looking at: weight calories activity But ignoring the central driver of most metabolic diseases. You can be: normal weight → and still insulin resistant overweight → but metabolically improving Until we measure and address: fasting insulin HOMA-IR postprandial glucose & insulin response we will keep chasing symptoms, not the root cause. My simple, practical solution: Fix the food environment first - not just carbs, but Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs) Eliminate or drastically reduce UPFs:packaged snacks biscuits, namkeens, bakery items sugary beverages ready-to-eat foods foods made with refined flours + industrial seed oils + additives These are the real drivers of:chronic overeating insulin resistance inflammation India doesn’t just have a “weight problem.” India has a metabolic health problem driven by insulin resistance. Fix the root - and weight, diabetes, BP, fatty liver will follow. Image credit: Soumen Das from Linkedin

Waste isn’t just a cleanliness issue, it’s a climate time bomb. Landfills quietly leak #methane, a gas far more potent than CO₂ in the short term, fueling warming while also creating real risks of fires, explosions, and toxic air. Poor waste management isn’t invisible; it shows up in public health, urban safety, and the climate crisis all at once. If cities are serious about climate action, waste systems can’t stay an afterthought. Segregation, methane capture, composting, and reducing landfill dependence aren’t “nice to have”, they’re urgent infrastructure. What we throw away doesn’t disappear; it comes back as heat, pollution, and risk. Hyderabad’s Jawahar Nagar and Mumbai’s Kanjurmarg landfill feature in global 15 landfills, should be reminder that waste is now a frontline climate issue. @PMOIndia @CPCB_OFFICIAL @moefcc @SwachSurvekshan timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/la… via @TchittaTOI @TOIIndiaNews

Well Done Netherlands 🇳🇱. This is not just about fireworks. It is about a country making a clear choice. Starting from the New Year period of 2026 to 2027, the Netherlands will ban citizens from buying and using fireworks nationwide. This is not a small change. It shifts a long tradition into something more controlled and safer. For years, New Year nights in the Netherlands brought chaos. Streets filled with smoke. Emergency rooms crowded with injuries. Fires breaking out in neighborhoods. Police and firefighters stretched to their limits. But there is another side that often gets ignored. Animals across the country go into panic during fireworks. Dogs shaking inside homes. Cats hiding under beds for hours. Birds flying into buildings in the dark. Shelters filling with lost pets the next day. They do not understand celebration. They only feel fear. This decision is meant to reduce that harm. Citizens will no longer be allowed to buy or set off fireworks. Fewer random explosions in neighborhoods. More control over how celebrations happen. Professional shows may still take place. But the loud, unpredictable noise in residential areas will be reduced. This is what change looks like when a government responds to years of pressure from safety experts, emergency workers, and animal welfare concerns. Less chaos. Less harm. More peace. And for animals, a quieter night is everything. Sources: - NL Times... Dutch Senate votes in favor of national fireworks ban - Euro News... Going out with a bang?
