Here is everything Dawn Staley had to say today about Geno Auriemma, his statement, and her perspective: "No distractions at this time... I grew up in the projects of North Philly. 215, 267 area code. Nothing can derail us, or me, from staying with the task at hand."

@fasc1nate A largely unknown fact. The British Royal Navy played a decisive role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. In the 60 years between 1808 - 1868 the Royal Navy captured roughly 1,600 slave ships and liberated over 150,000 Africans. 2000 British Servicemen died in this mission.

"The Dens of Death," part of the infamous crime-ridden slum in New York City known as the Five Points. Photo by Jacob Riis, 1872..... This stark image, titled “The Dens of Death,” was taken by pioneering social reform photographer Jacob Riis in the 1870s inside New York City’s infamous Five Points neighborhood. During the 19th century, Five Points, located roughly where Chinatown and the Civic Center meet today, was considered one of the most dangerous and overcrowded districts in the United States. The area grew rapidly with waves of immigrants, especially Irish fleeing the Great Irish Famine. Tenement housing packed families into poorly ventilated wooden buildings where sanitation was almost nonexistent. In some blocks, thousands of people lived in a single acre. Crime, disease, and poverty became so widespread that Five Points gained a national reputation as the center of urban misery in America. Riis used photography and investigative journalism to expose these conditions in his influential 1890 book How the Other Half Lives. His work shocked middle-class readers and helped push New York toward major housing and sanitation reforms. Riis was among the first journalists to use flash photography, a dangerous technique using magnesium powder, allowing him to capture the dark interiors of tenements that had never been photographed before. © Historical Photos #archaeohistories

A new study suggests that a million or more European Christians were enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530-1780 – a far greater number than had ever been estimated before. In a new book, Robert Davis, professor of history at Ohio State University, developed a unique methodology to calculate the number of white Christians who were enslaved along Africa’s Barbary Coast, arriving at much higher slave population estimates than any previous studies had found. Most other accounts of slavery along Barbary coast didn’t try to estimate the number of slaves, or only looked at the number of slaves in particular cities, Davis said. Most previously estimated slave counts have thus tended to be in the thousands, or at most in the tens of thousands. Davis, by contrast, has calculated that between 1 million and 1.25 million European Christians were captured and forced to work in North Africa from 16th-18th Centuries. “Much of what has been written gives the impression that there were not many slaves and minimizes the impact that slavery had on Europe,” Davis said. “Most accounts only look at slavery in one place, or only for a short period of time. But when you take a broader, longer view, the massive scope of this slavery and its powerful impact become clear.” Davis said it is useful to compare this Mediterranean slavery to the Atlantic slave trade that brought black Africans to the Americas. Over the course of four centuries, the Atlantic slave trade was much larger – about 10 to 12 million black Africans were brought to the Americas. But from 1500 to 1650, when trans-Atlantic slaving was still in its infancy, more white Christian slaves were probably taken to Barbary than black African slaves to the Americas, according to Davis. “One of the things that both the public and many scholars have tended to take as given is that slavery was always racial in nature – that only blacks have been slaves. But that is not true,” Davis said. “We cannot think of slavery as something that only white people did to black people.” During the time period Davis studied, it was religion and ethnicity, as much as race, that determined who became slaves. “Enslavement was a very real possibility for anyone who traveled in the Mediterranean, or who lived along the shores in places like Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, and even as far north as England and Iceland,” he said. Pirates (called corsairs) from cities along the Barbary Coast in north Africa – cities such as Tunis and Algiers – would raid ships in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, as well as seaside villages to capture men, women and children. The impact of these attacks were devastating – France, England, and Spain each lost thousands of ships, and long stretches of the Spanish and Italian coasts were almost completely abandoned by their inhabitants. At its peak, the destruction and depopulation of some areas probably exceeded what European slavers would later inflict on the African interior. Although hundreds of thousands of Christian slaves were taken from Mediterranean countries, Davis noted, the effects of Muslim slave raids was felt much further away: it appears, for example, that through most of 17th Century the English lost at least 400 sailors a year to the slavers. Even Americans were not immune. For example, one American slave reported that 130 other American seamen had been enslaved by the Algerians in the Mediterranean and Atlantic just between 1785-1793. *** Davis’s new estimates appear in the book Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800 (Palgrave Macmillan). 📷 : Scene at a slave market by Swiss artist Otto Pilny (1866-1936) painted in 1919. #archaeohistories

@archeohistories I seriously doubt it. If they’d had complex astronomical knowledge they would have been exploring the world like Europeans. Also you would have seen cities with better structures, like those in Europe. Thats not an opinion. Thats a fact.

When European settlers arrived, they didn't find empty wilderness. They found complex societies with trade networks spanning thousands of miles, astronomical knowledge passed down through generations, and confederacies that had maintained peace through democratic councils long before the Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia. The Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Haudenosaunee, united six nations under a system of checks and balances, representative government, and consensus building. Benjamin Franklin and other founders studied their Great Law of Peace. Some historians argue it directly influenced the federal structure of the United States, though this remains debated in academic circles. By the time state lines were drawn, displacement had already begun. Treaties were signed and broken. Languages were suppressed. Ceremonies banned. Yet Indigenous nations persisted. Today, over 570 federally recognized tribes continue their governance, cultural practices, and fight for sovereignty. Their history didn't end in the past tense. It continues in courtrooms, classrooms, and on reclaimed ancestral lands. #archaeohistories

Mac McClung's career journey has been wild. On Oct 27, he signed a multiyear contract for the first time in his career. He'd been mostly on 2-way and camp deals since 2021, before the Pacers' contract. With Indiana, Mac averaged 6.3 PPG over 3 games. But just a little over a week later, the Pacers waived him after signing Monté Morris. This isn't even the first time McClung has been waived this season. On October 17, he signed with the Bulls, only to be waived 3 hours later. And since going undrafted in 2021, he's spent time with the Lakers, Bulls, Sixers, Magic, and Pacers' organizations - mostly in the G-League. Despite playing a total of 9 NBA games in his career, McClung has shined elsewhere: ⭐️ Only player in history to win Dunk Contest 3 years in a row ⭐️ G-League Rookie of the Year (2022) ⭐️ G-League champ (2023) ⭐️ G-League MVP (2024) ⭐️ G-League scoring champ (2024) ⭐️ 2x All-NBA G-League First Team Now, the journey continues for Mac McClung. He's continued to grind wherever he's at. And we'll see where the road takes him next.
