Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has actual wealth, from savings. PM Carney’s proposed fund is being created entirely from borrowed money. Markets allocate capital more efficiently than governments. And if nation-building projects are commercially viable, private and pension capital (which Canada has A LOT of) it will fund them. If they’re not viable without government support, a sovereign fund doesn’t change the math on that, it just makes you responsible losses.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Stimulating growth with an hugely indebted economy while refusing to reduce red tape and cut taxes isn’t a thing. They cancel each other out.
