@arnsholt @TarjeiJS Maybeeee, but that was 45 for 40 moves and 15 mins for the rest of the game, so it wasn’t classical at the time.

@OlaWikander I’m quite partial to Maria Dahvana Headley’s translation «Bro!» myself.

Siste runde i NM langsjakk starter kl 10. Hammer ligger best an med noe enklere motstand i siste runde. bergensjakk.no/2025/07/12/lan…

@shadowcat_mst My least favourite part of Python by far is the naming and binding model. Also, it’s hilarious how «explicit is better than implicit» also has implicit variable declarations of all things.

I think perl's greatest achievement is that 'my' was pretty directly copied into JS as 'let' - block scoping + explicit declaration + decent closures ftw. I still can't write python comfortably because its coarse grained and horrifically implicit scoping model hurts my brain.
Ben Tilly@BenTilly4

@shadowcat_mst In its favor, Perl was the language that set the standard for what features future scripting languages would have. Scalars, arrays, and hashes (aka dictionaries). With regular expressions available. But context wasn't a good idea. It was used very inconsistently.

@ChristinGorman Another thing I think is good about the Norwegian system is that there are no out of order elections: if a government falls to a vote of no confidence, you’re still stuck with the same parliament, so the no confidence majority is then basically stuck with forming a new one.

I love the Norwegian political system more and more. 8 parties in congress. Coalition government. We have a popular opportunistic right wing party as well. But we also have parties with pretty similar economic policies, just without the racism, climate denial and so on.

@fasterthanlime Unrelated, but I am reminded of my all time favourite Smalltalk method, Object>>become: which lets you in place replace all references to an object with some other random object. If you did it on a small int on the old ST I learned it in the interpreter would SEGV. Good times.

@ChristinGorman Another similarity with the act of programming itself is that they’re both practical skills. You can read yourself better at the practical parts, you have to go out and actually do it (and fail lots) to improve.

I've played way too much chess lately. Haven't bothered with lessons or watching pros play, I just play the game. So my progress is slower than it could be. But playing - and losing - is necessary to get better. And a link to software development just came to me. 🧵

the main consequence for cheating at chess is that people will, in the future, think you are still cheating this is easily avoided by “not cheating” and people should learn this as young as possible
