Two Governments, One Outcome: Citizens Bear the Cost 📉Bangladesh’s GDP growth has slowed to 3.49%. The figure may appear modest at first glance, but behind it lies a more complex story of economic strain and policy challenges. In the 2021–22 fiscal year, the economy expanded at a rate of 7.10%. Within a relatively short period, that momentum has fallen by more than half. Outside of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bangladesh has rarely seen growth dip to such levels. This time, however, there has been no global lockdown or comparable external shock — raising questions about domestic economic management. When @Yunus_Centre assumed office, he did so with significant international recognition. Known to global institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF, he brought with him a reputation shaped by decades of development work. Yet steering a national economy presents different challenges. During his tenure, private sector investment remained subdued, foreign exchange reserves faced pressure, and inflation continued to weigh on households. Critics argue that the administration struggled to translate its global standing into tangible domestic economic recovery. Attention has also turned to the @bdbnp78 , now back in power. Bangladesh’s per capita income, after declining for two consecutive years, has edged up slightly to $2,769. While the increase may offer some statistical reassurance, many households say it has not eased the daily pressures of living costs. Economists note that attributing the downturn to a single administration oversimplifies a broader set of structural and policy challenges. Critics of the Yunus-led interim government argue that key opportunities were missed, while sceptics of the BNP question whether it can overcome both current headwinds and its own political legacy. The result is an economy facing pressures reminiscent of the pandemic era — but without the presence of a global health crisis.
