The raids conducted on the Punjab Kesari media house expose the criminal, undemocratic, and authoritarian mindset of the Kejriwal–Bhagwant Mann duo. This disgraceful and sinister attempt by the Bhagwant Mann government to intimidate the media and crush the voice of a free democracy takes us straight back to the dark days of 1975, when Mrs Indira Gandhi imposed her dictatorship during the Emergency. It is a nationalist and democratic institution that stood firm during Punjab’s most difficult years, during the era of terrorism, and even when Mrs Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency on the nation in 1975. The group confronted the Emergency head-on. It did not bow down during the years of bombs, bullets, and threats. It made sacrifices. Families, journalists, and employees of the group faced martyrdom, but the pen never stopped, never bent, and never surrendered, and it never will. The entire nation stands with Punjab Kesari. Its journalism did not stop then, and it will not be silenced now. The Bharatiya Janata Party stands firmly for the freedom of the media and condemns this unconstitutional and repressive action in the strongest possible words. Under the Aam Aadmi Party government, muzzling the media has become a routine practice. Recently, FIRs were registered against journalists for questioning the misuse of the Chief Minister’s helicopter. Earlier, media vehicles carrying newspapers were obstructed, intimidated, and threatened by the Bhagwant Mann government. The BJP takes strong exception to these actions and, to safeguard the Constitution and the fourth pillar of democracy, will seek the immediate intervention of the Governor of Punjab in this matter.
