On the fifth day of war, several things are slightly clearer: Iran’s regime is still solidly in place and apparently moving toward Khamenei’s succession; there has been no mass uprising in Iran, mainly because it’s very difficult to organize anything in the midst of chaos; bombing government or regime buildings does virtually nothing to force regimes out; Hezbollah’s entry into the battle is both tied to, and separate from, Iran’s fate, because even if Iran emerges stronger from the war, it’s highly unlikely Israel will cease its operations in Lebanon until it can impose conditions it wants; and for the time being, the U.S. and Israel seem far from achieving their objectives on the nuclear, ballistic missile, and regional allies front. Supplies of armaments will be an important variable, and if Gen. Dan Caine was correct, this could emerge as a major problem in the coming weeks, probably for both sides. I could say more, but all the signs are that the situation is becoming much more complicated, which will ultimately impact Trump’s decisions.

Friends, I am at a loss of words for how devastating it would be to lose the entire intramural #NIH program. Some of the biggest medical and scientific breakthroughs have come from scientists in the NIH Intramural program. #SaveTheNIH science.org/content/articl…

They’re invested in the journey to discover truths, find cures for diseases, create knowledge, advance science. If not stopped, these actions will destroy labs and institutions. The loss will be irreparable, impact society at each level. Heartbreaking stories from those affected.

Photos from the rally last week to support science, protest firings at NIH, NSF & budget cuts for research. Careers of people who worked hard for science & public service have been lost. There were many young people, including students from my lab, who’re anxious about the future

@vanillaopinions Well, they are preparing to fire 50% at some agencies. Good luck building them back up -- especially US science agencies.

@Brendan_Duke Are these cuts on top of any annual reductions in appropriations or does the "Oversight and other" category represent these reductions? If so, 50B/year reductions are not commensurate with the staff reductions being carried out.

The cuts in the House GOP budget resolution are bigger than you think. Normally, we talk 10 year scores but the resolution is over 2025-2034. FY2025 is almost half over and I suspect cuts won't take effect until FY2026. i.e. The $880B cut to Medicaid is more like a $1T cut.

The House GOP plan Trump endorsed is poised to slash Medicaid by around 10% and SNAP by around 20% AND increase deficits by $2.8 trillion to pay for tax cut renewals. My @Morning_Joe Chart

Join the protest in support of science & academia today (Feb 19, 12 pm) in DC! Join thousands of scientists as we raise our voice against federal firings, funding freezes and impending budget cuts which will be devastating for scientific research & discovery, and shut down labs.

@rmc031 This happened at NSF. Program Directors who joined as temporary (IPAs) and were made permanent within the last two years doing essentially the same job, were let go. These were tenured professors before coming to NSF.

i think it has not sunk in for people, including newspaper headline writers, that "probationary" employees does not just mean like, young novice staffers right out of college, but those who have received promotions in the last year

New post! Looking at three recent papers on the productivity impacts of government funded research, both in the US and OECD. Across different methods, all find positive impacts.

This is absolutely insane. If scientists aren't allowed to use the term "women" or "female" when applying for NSF grants, that basically rules out any human clinical trials of anything. "Disability" is blacklisted too? There goes a lot of medical research.
Rachel Cohen Booth@rcobooth

Per @darbysaxbe, from a program officer at the National Science Foundation, federal grants can now be pulled for containing any of these keywords. Absurd and dangerous
