Think fairly widely known story is he beat Eddie Sinclair 43-42 in drinking competition. Sinclair passes out after his 42nd pint Bill finishes the 43rd one and says ‘I'm away to the bar now for a proper drink.’

Doctors advised Werbeniuk to drink alcohol to counteract a familial benign essential tremor. Many people just think he was a drunk, but if he wanted to play snooker, he had to drink.

Big Bill was fairly consistent 80-84 was ranked 10/9/8th in world. Then in 84/85 started to struggle to keep in top 16. Obviously he had health issues but so sad he died at 56.

Seems winning nation then got to enter two teams. Strangely during golden era of snooker prize money went down. Higgins, Taylor & Hughes had split £40k the year before but shared £33k in ‘86

The bizarre doubles combination of Eddie Charlton & Alex Higgins (who frequently over their careers seemed to detest one another.) A subdued crowd seem little moved by Higgins playing off six cushions after he pots pink to get to black.

@baizewatch Cliff was born in the wrong era. I played him at a holiday camp and he was potting them off the lampshades. As he would say in his advertising ‘you ain’t seen nothing like it’

Cliff's prodigious talent would see him go on to finish runner up in the competition, aged just nineteen - March 1954

But then didn’t get any regular traction. Had 1/4 finals in 86,89,92. So this was a fairly obscure question on British tv in late 1980s. Wasn’t well known.

That would have been a highly obscure ‘general topic’ answer in a TV sports quiz!

Trump has won the German Masters four times in the Twenties now. Prolific stuff. A first tournament win for 14 months for world No.1 Trump. And I think that now means we've had 15 different winners in a row at ranking events. #Snooker
