The best health tech is built around the people using it. Human systems integration is the discipline that makes that possible, and it plays a growing role in how federal health IT gets designed & delivered. This article takes a closer look: bit.ly/4uohOX7

Mental health is not a side conversation. It is the conversation. This May, we pause to recognize #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth and the courage it takes to prioritize well-being, in work and in life. Thank you to everyone showing up for themselves and for each other.

Behind every VA appointment is someone who made it happen. Our medical support assistants and advanced MSAs are located at VA facilities across Colorado and Texas. We talked with a few of them about why this mission matters: bit.ly/4tvldUa

Celebrating Pharmacy Improvements in the Federal EHR Momentum is growing across VA’s Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) modernization effort, especially within pharmacy, where recent improvements are already making a difference. VA pharmacies fill more than 150 million prescriptions every year and consistently rank among the best in national satisfaction surveys, so having a system that truly supports their work is essential. Deputy Secretary Paul Lawrence, Ph.D., and his team visited 16 VA pharmacies and collected clear feedback that noted earlier versions of the Federal EHR were creating frustration and adding unnecessary manual steps. In response, VA leadership, pharmacy teams, and Oracle Health partnered closely to define requirements and deliver meaningful updates ahead of the Michigan deployments in April. The latest enhancements, released in late February, directly reflect what pharmacy teams asked for and are already improving functionality and efficiency. More updates are planned for additional go‑lives later this year. The successful delivery of these fixes marks a turning point and demonstrates what can be achieved when field feedback, leadership commitment, and vendor collaboration align. I recently joined @GovernmentCIO to talk about Michigan’s successful go-lives with the Federal EHR and to share what we are learning as we move into the next phase of modernization. We spent months listening to staff, understanding their concerns, and shaping workflow improvements that would make their experience better on day one. That foundation guided every step that followed. Behind the scenes, teams across Michigan took part in onboarding workshops, learning labs, and hands-on practice sessions that gave them the confidence to hit the ground running. Throughout the previous year, my team and I visited each site and met with more than 600 staff to gather feedback. They were energized, creative, and committed to making this transition successful. In addition, we spoke with #Veterans to better understand their experiences, ensuring them that their voices continue to guide how we improve their care. By the time we reached go-live on April 11, teams in @VAAnnArbor, Battle Creek, @VADetroit, and @vasaginaw were already familiar with the system and their daily responsibilities. As of today, all four sites are functioning smoothly with no major issues, and experienced users are on site to support clinicians during the first weeks of this transition. This early success is already shaping the remaining deployments planned for 2026 and beyond. Watch my full interview to hear more. govciomedia.com/va-deputy-secr

The FederalEHR went live at four VA Medical Centers in Michigan on Saturday: Battle Creek, @VAAnnArbor, @VADetroit, and @vasaginaw. The local community is picking up on our excitement, so I want to share a video that captured the significance of the FederalEHR's go-live and what this modernization means for Veterans. For the first time, a Veteran’s health information will be connected across military, civilian, and VA systems. That means fewer repeated tests, fewer gaps in records, and a smoother experience when Veterans move between different care locations. In Battle Creek, the early signs are encouraging. Staff are now using the FederalEHR in real time as patient volume increases. Teams across the medical center have been preparing for months, and that preparation is showing. Workflows are moving as expected, coordination is strong, and the focus remains on delivering a smooth experience for Veterans. We will continue to track performance, listen to staff, and ensure the FederalEHR supports high-quality care. Watch more here:

I recently sat down with @GovernmentCIO to reflect on what’s powering our momentum of FederalEHR deployments and why we’re in such a strong position heading into the remainder of 2026 and beyond. We successfully deployed in Michigan on April 11 at @VAAnnArbor, Battle Creek, @VADetroit, and @vasaginaw. What stood out most to me wasn’t just the technology, it was the people behind it. VA’s commitment to modernizing our health record has been clear from the top, and that clarity has allowed us to streamline decisions and focus on what matters: delivering world‑class care for Veterans. A second key factor is our deep engagement with the field. In the months leading up to Michigan’s go‑live, I met with more than 600 staff across the four sites. Their feedback shaped our priorities, our workflows, and even how we structured communities of practice to bring clinicians together and address real‑world challenges. One area I’m especially proud of is the progress in pharmacy. After spending time in VA pharmacies and hearing firsthand what wasn’t working, we partnered with Oracle Health to design updates that matter most to our teams. Clearer worklists and faster medication processing are the kinds of practical improvements pharmacists told us they needed and those changes are now live. Taken together, we’re creating a more consistent and standardized experience for our staff and a more seamless care journey for the Veterans who rely on us. This past weekend marked an important milestone at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, Michigan, as the site deployed the FederalEHR alongside @VAAnnArbor, Battle Creek, and @VADetroit. The deployment of the FederalEHR at four more sites brings VA closer to the goal of bringing Veterans’ health information together in one place so their care is easier to follow, no matter which medical center or community care provider they visit. Veterans who travel or receive care at multiple locations or in the community will now benefit from a single, unified record rather than navigating information spread across different systems. The new technology also improves clinical operations. Providers now have clearer views and more streamlined workflows that let them spend more time with Veterans and less time sorting through multiple screens or applications. It’s also encouraging to see the FederalEHR gaining media attention. @vasaginaw’s progress is a strong step forward as we work toward a full nationwide transition by 2031.
