AI really can help education: Randomized controlled experiment on high school students found a GPT-4o powered tutor that personalized problems for students raised final test scores by .15 SD, "equivalent to as much as six to nine months of additional schooling by some estimates"

I moved to Austin in part so that my kids could go to Alpha School (despite tuition being $40k/year/kid). Now kids in Texas get the exact same academics for free, even from home, with GT School Anywhere.

A slide from one of our Alpha School graduates’ SXSW presentation

Yesterday I was honored to witness the ribbon cutting for GT School's new Competition Lab - basically the container for the future of competitive academics at GT School. Students earn the privilege of participating in Competition Lab by meeting their daily XP goals on Timeback and staying up to speed on their standard afternoon workshops. We will provision eligible students with time, materials, and support to achieve new heights in their specialties: math, robotics/engineering, creative writing, quiz bowl, etc. But we can't do it for them, and we won't let them coast. Competition Lab's GM, guide Matt Starolis, challenged our kids to formally sign the Competition Lab pledge and initiate their responsibilities as members. That's my daughter, Claudia (age 10), accepting. She heads to quiz bowl nationals in Chicago in May, and she meets her new writing coach on Thursday.

@ByrneHobart Prediction: Within a couple of years, your child will be learning from an app built by an Alpha School student. Related: SaaS market is doomed. I’m watching my $100m+ investment in Timeback be disrupted by the students.

There is no reason why a grade level's worth of learning has to take a year. Kids can master the material so much faster, and climb so much higher, if you give them individualized instruction up the skill tree and avoid wasting their time.

What is the single most efficient use of a student's time right at this moment? Have them do that. Because to do otherwise is to hold them back from achieving their fullest potential.

Everest Nevraumont is a 11-year-old student at the Alpha School, which is based in Austin, Texas. Everest participates in AI-powered, personalized learning through her school. She is a public speaker, AI-education advocate, three-time Texas State Champion in History, and was on a winning International History Bowl team. She also delivered a TedX speech about how she uses AI in her education. 2026 State of the Union

From an anonymous Substack review to the floor of the U.S. Capitol in a matter of months. @Ednever wrote the viral Alpha School review. His 10-year-old daughter Everest - three-time Texas state history champion and TEDx speaker - will be the First Lady's guest at tonight's State of the Union. This is what happens when Alpha School founding families go all-in on transforming education. 🔥

By the way if you have kids in Texas they can enroll in the remote version of what is described in this post (GT School Anywhere) for free with the new TEFA vouchers. Academic outcomes that crush any private school. For free. Luckiest kids in the world. anywhere.gt.school

10yo’s first vibecoded app: echowriting.xyz (She concedes that Claude did most of the work.)

@Austen Are there products for tutoring? My son loves his school but I’m afraid the academics are lacking.
