Turkey imports nearly all its oil and gas. The Iran War pushed oil above $100/barrel, massively inflating the import bill. To stop the lira from collapsing which would make imports even more expensive and reignite inflation, the central bank is burning FX reserves and now gold to supply dollars to the market. Capital flight is compounding the problem: foreign investors pulled $3B from Turkish bonds in a single week, and locals are converting lira savings to dollars at street-level premiums. Half the gold is being pledged via swaps at the Bank of England for quick USD. The other half is being sold outright. Gold became the last available lever after Turkey already liquidated ~$16B in foreign-currency bonds in prior weeks. Ripple effects: • Gold prices suppressed : Turkey alone is dumping more gold than all global ETF outflows combined, adding significant physical supply at an already-weak moment. • Reserve adequacy concerns: Net reserves are thinning fast; if they go negative, perception shifts from “strained” to “crisis.” • Rate hike incoming: Markets are pricing a 100bps hike, which would slow capital flight but crush Turkish businesses already carrying 37–40% interest debt. • Doom loop risk: Every dollar burned defending the lira signals desperation, which accelerates the very outflows the bank is trying to stop.
