I've decided to have a go at Substack! 'A bit better' is a newsletter about trying to improve the world a bit, while distracting ourselves from the garbage fire on an as-needs basis. open.substack.com/pub/abitbetter…

if it feels like there has been less news coming out of Gaza today, consider that Israel has totally cut internet access today, no electricity, no food, no aid, international journalists and UN workers slain in cold blood, a blackout of information is the point

@Tito_Ambyo I finished school in 2003, a unit in HSC Modern History on the Indochina war (Vietnam and Cambodia) was the deepest we got into SE Asia. I knew barely anything about Indonesia when I took a job in Jakarta! Learned so much, couldn't believe I hadn't learned more at school.

What do Australians learn about Asia at school? My gf started reading We Have Tired of Violence and she broke down crying after 1st chapter. And she said she didn’t know about what happened in Indonesia in 1998. She went to a good school+uni, intelligent and generally informed.

For those in the #Succession and aid bubbles: 1. Shiv Roy has very good adaptative management skills. 2. Her two dopey siblings are logframe bros. 3. I may regret this post next week.

@em_wynne In NSW it is not on the ballot but you have to put them on all your campaign materials like posters and flyers (unless you have an office, which most local councillors do not).

@DrKate_Miller @GidMK Yep and the hype around these drugs is not considering possible long term effects, not adequately discussing the severity of side effects, nor considering (in my experience) that they are pretty much an injectable eating disorder.

It's definitely true that people's attitudes towards effective weight loss medication is bizarrely judgmental No one got mad when semaglutide was just effective long-term for diabetes
Stuart Ritchie@StuartJRitchie

How many anti-semaglutide articles has the Guardian published now? More than a dozen I think, attacking it from every spurious angle possible. It’s always weird to be reminded that your reasoning (to me it seems obviously a positive thing) is wildly different from someone else’s:

As @dfat completes its own Development Finance Review, worth noting that the Biden Administration is seeking US$2 billion in new equity investments for the US International Development Finance Corporation "as part of the broad ‘Out-Compete China Initiative’"

@evcricket Yes I ran a 600+ person paid conference using Eventbrite. Works well and takes a lot of hassle out of it especially on refunds. Just be aware you get paid out after the event as a lump sum. If you don't have a GST exemption you'll also need to have that in your pricing.

Anyone ever run training or training something with some $ involved through Eventbrite? If I sold some tickets at $500 a throw or whatever will that work fine?

@niltiac @kerryn_baker Yeah I don't have kids and I mostly work from home. Talking about my own preferences here!! Even referred to myself in the singular, never purported to speak for all non-morning people...

@RabeeTourky @MarkDando4 Didn't the defined benefit super end for new PS employees nearly 20 years ago? No Millennials would be on this. The median age is 35 and less than half the workforce are even in public service. So this is not typical for Canberra.

@DrDemography Even putting the housing crisis aside, imagine being in any other business, and not expecting or anticipating to be in the red sometimes? The entitlement is just.... wow.

@Tom_Swann Unfortunately for me I am not disabled enough for a pass but completely unable to ride a bike or walk for more than 200-300m without needing to rest. Not lazy, but I just get to miss out on everything.

@Sue_Webeck Still haven’t been invited to participate in a IWD event, other than morning tea attendance. Decades and nothing. I guess I’m the wrong kind of woman. But you. I can’t imagine anyone that embodies IWD than you. Love your work xx

The one event I had booked in for IWD was postponed. I declined many but one because they asked if someone more “visually aligned with IWD” was available so today we are celebrating with lunch for the team and continuing to do the work we do every day to create change. #IWD2023
