@ShitpostRock This is some serious 'death of the author' narrative. Do some women fantasize or get pleasure from the idea of being repressed? Sure, women get pleasure from all sorts of things Margaret Atwood, however, could not have been more explicit about recognizing it as monstrous

@princeofthef4ll I feel like if you genuinely believe "the other side is incapable of thinking/common sense/etc", it says more about you being in a bubble, then it does about them. Actually read and try to understand the other side for once, ignore the shitposters. You might learn something.

@CeoRookie Imagine you work hard, live frugally, and save up money your entire life. Then, when your family finds out about your savings, they start asking for handouts. Let's turn this around - if the dad had family values, he would not have forced that financial burden on his kids.

@memeticsisyphus Greek ethics were different from Roman ethics, were different from early Christian, were different from enlightenment, were different from modern/postmodern ethics. Yet all of them are influenced by one another. It's you Christians who pretend like ethics are unchanging, not us.

Do people really not know how different Greek ethics was?
Aaron@Aaron1598618

@memeticsisyphus No you're just repeatedly lying because those ethics systems were not created by Christianity but by Greek philosophers. You're so desperate for validation that you're constantly lying to try to get it.

As a biology student, no mammal has ever changed sex and we have never been taught about any animal species having more than 2 sexes. Even "hermaphrodites" are a mix of the 2 sexes and it doesn't exist in humans.

@seamus_coughlin Your analogy fails because we don't live in a purely Christian society. We live in a pluralistic society with many, some Christian, some Greco-Roman, some Eastern morality. Christianity is a decent chunk of it yes, but it's not 100%.

@real_lumethos @memeticsisyphus Thank you for being one of the rare people on this platform actually responding rather than resorting to insults or personal incredulity. I think your point makes some unwarranted assumptions, but a 280-character limit space is probably not the right place to hash this out :)

@ashemup @memeticsisyphus A simple refutation: No. God can only make possible things happen. If morality is rooted in God's nature, then to change it would be to change God, which is impossible, so it is consistent with the definition of "all powerful" (Can make all logically possible things happen).

I think it’s funny how often the atheist arguments end up mistaking “it is” with something like “God’s feelings.” Such a profound misunderstanding of the topic.
Bombvoyage@Bombvoyage18

@memeticsisyphus I mean all morality requires at least 2 people otherwise it’s how the person feels. With a theistic morality there is always 2, you and god. And it’s gods feelings that are the most important hence why theistic morality is an appeal to authority rather than an appeal to emotion.

@nickbuccero For me, my issue is his methods. Obviously I'm against fraud, and I can't imagine any politician being pro-fraud. But Nick's 'shotgun approach' to accusations is not good journalism. Sometimes he hits something yes, but just as often he misses and hits an innocent bystander.

Look. I don’t care what your politics are. This is happening at scale all across the country, and there are real, serious people out there that want to convince you all our problems would be solved by taxing people more. It’s fantasy land

Nick Shirley uncovers an adult day care in Flushing, Queens with 7,000 phantom members. Nick: “This public document says you have 7,899 members.” Employee: “No, we don’t have 7,000 members.” Nick: “So you’re overbilling then? You’re getting paid $1,600 per patient — that’s how you got $12.9 million in 2024.” Employee: “Please leave.” American taxpayer dollars at work.

@ShitpostRock This is just self-evidently false though. Non-Christian countries aren't perfect sure, but you can't claim they are hedonistic, nihilistic hell-holes. If anything, the western, Christian world is *more* self-serving and individualistic than the non-Christian world.

Notice how they have no argument? Because there is none! That's the entire point!!! Without the objective moral foundation Christianity imposed on the West for centuries, our morals would be far more fluid, self-serving, and unrecognizable. Reduced to whatever feels good or whatever the current culture tolerates. You can quite literally see the effects of it The roadkill test simply exposes that vacuum

@kangminlee Before the spread of Christianity, Greco-Roman cultures had virtues like valor, courage, character, and so on. After the spread of Christianity, Christian societies enslaved and colonized entire countries, committed genocide, and so on. See, two can play at this game.

Before the spread of Christianity, pagan societies sacrificed children to gods for better harvests and ate one another for sport. Yet atheists insist the Golden Rule is some universal moral intuition that all humans can simply stumble upon by random chance. Without Christianity, you'd probably still be trying to kill innocent babies. Oh wait, you already are. What little conception you even have of morality today is substantially shaped by the legacy and lingering vestiges of Christian ethics.

@o_sneedy A good person is someone who takes actions that promote human happiness and overall well-being. It's kind of sad you're acting so smug and don't even know the basics of moral philosophy (in this cary, the literal definition of utilitarianism)

@NotOkN1 Ask yourself the question: what if one day it somehow became completely clear there was no God, due to some new discovery/enlightenment/whatever. On that hypothetical day, would you have sex with roadkill? If not, why not?

@OrthodoxOrigen Influenced by Christian morality yes. But also influenced by Greeks, Romans, the Renaissance, colonization, and so on. You can't just summarize all that as 'Christian'. No matter how much I'm influenced by JRR Tolkien, that does not make my writings Lord of the Rings.

In the 3rd and 4th centuries Christian authors had to explain in their writings why women and slaves should have an equal place in the afterlife to emperors and men. The claim that contemporary Western ethics are just universal inclinations is evidently false.

@ShitpostRock The flaw with your argument is that it implies that if, hypothetically, God didn't exist, it would be okay to have sex with roadkill. I, as an atheist, think it's wrong regardless of God's existence. You apparently, are one God away from having an orgy on the highway.

The best logical fallacy to give an atheist when discussing morals is to ask them why it's morally wrong to have intercourse with roadkill It's dead it will not feel anything, nobody will know and there are no victims If you ask a Christian or Buddhist why it's morally wrong, they will tell you it's because the body retains inherent dignity as part of God's creation (or the sacred flow of life), and desecrating it violates divine/natural order, harms your soul/karma, and shows disrespect, even if no one feels it or knows An atheistic worldview of this question taken to its extreme, concludes that intercourse with roadkill is tantamount to masturbation and nothing more
