@wokenessucks given how polling trends have gone in the past, a good majority of people won't vote at all (for whatever reason) and that's what most red button pressers fail to realize. that's why a lot of people press blue instead

The problem with the red button/blue button thing is that blue button people still live with this filter over their eyes that distorts reality. They lack the self-awareness to realize that if they were actually in that situation in real life, they’d push the red button too. That’s exactly why they get so mad and take it personally when we don’t see it their way. They call us immoral and evil. But we see the world realistically. They don’t. When you factor in the other 8 billion people on Earth and the raw fear of possibly dying, there’s zero chance 51% hit the blue button. 95–98% of people would take the guaranteed safe option and choose red. We know this because we deal in reality, not fantasy. For us red-button people, pushing blue is suicide. Is it sad that out of 8 billion some will inevitably hit blue and die? Yes. But if blue is suicide, I’m still hitting red. The vast majority of blue button people lack the self-awareness to know how they’d actually react under pressure. They’re the morons who die first in horror movies.

Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press? BE HONEST.

@MilanoTruffles what a lot of people don't take into consideration is the people who don't vote. you vote blue because you know it's physically impossible for everyone to vote red it's funny that 90% of the discourse about this is red voters justifying their position

@Krokuke @Rage_Crayon @TheSecretNinja3 @cryptotriv @LocalSharkGirl this is where we differ. you take "have to" to mean that there's external coercion forcing you to choose. I take "have to" to mean that there's a simple compulsion against an unfavorable outcome, like how it'd be during American elections. we are not the same

@ashkat_t @Rage_Crayon @TheSecretNinja3 @cryptotriv @LocalSharkGirl Its. a. hypothetical. In a reasonable world you wouldn't have to write it like "Everyone on earth takes a private vote in a secluded room by pressing a red or blue button. There aren't any more options. If you don't do anything within 30 seconds then two armed men will come to...

@kawagiwirl you press blue because if blue loses then a lot of humanity dies. it's not just red vs blue, it's red vs blue vs nothing, because statistically most people aren't going to choose either option

Im genuinely wondering why would anyone even press blue in the first place 😭 🔴 = 100% chance of getting nothing 🔵 = 50% chance of getting nothing / 50% chance of losing something Why would you bet on negative ?

@Dirty_Casualty it's easier to get half to press the blue button than it is to get all to press the red button. that's why blue ultimately won. you press blue knowing that your loved ones aren't aware of/interested in the poll, because realistically a lot of people won't choose at all

@tonkertom there's an assumption that everyone is pressing a button just because it says you have to, but there aren't any stated consequences to pressing neither. in a real world scenario, most people aren't gonna make a choice. look at american elections, for example

@Krokuke @Rage_Crayon @TheSecretNinja3 @cryptotriv @LocalSharkGirl at the same time, he doesn't say anything about Not doing nothing. given that this is a timed poll you can just run down the clock, and if it weren't timed, it'd never end because you can still just choose not to press either of the buttons

@ashkat_t @Rage_Crayon @TheSecretNinja3 @cryptotriv @LocalSharkGirl "Everyone in the world HAS to take a private vote by pressing a red OR blue button." I don't see where he said that you can just do nothing, there wasn't a third option given. I could also just say "I'd press both buttons at once" but it ruins the premise of the hypothetical.

@cryptotriv @LocalSharkGirl that's because, with the buttons, you are jeopardized by the possibility of red winning. with the train, you aren't jeopardized to begin with. the people who tie themselves to the tracks jeopardize themselves by creating a problem that wasn't there to begin with

@LocalSharkGirl The people who voted blue in the button question, decided that children and their parents and the naive 32% are not worth saving suddenly in the train question.

@baalzamon35 So blue is adding details to the question that were not there in the first place to moralise. Who putting the baby under the crusher that you now have to save?

The crusher is a great way of illustrating this problem. For the Red Button folks, they see this as an abstract where the crusher kills nobody until/unless they make an informed decision. Obviously, you'd get out of the way right? Hell, everyone should move, the scenario will wait long enough to get everyone out. For the Blue Button folks, they picture a helpless child or maybe even all helpless children trapped and are willing to risk their lives (on paper at least) to hold the crusher up and protect those unable or unwilling to move. Who wouldn't risk their life to save another? Or at least, WANT the courage to do so.

The whole blue and red button drama is basically this summarized If everyone clicked red, nobody would die. Those that click blue have suicidal empathy
