What does it really take to build a startup that investors believe in? This was the question at the heart of our recent Community Hangout at Semicolon Africa, where we had the honor of hosting Tomi Davies, Collaborator-in-Chief at TVCLabs. During the session, Tomi shared thoughtful perspectives drawn from years of building companies, supporting founders, and investing in innovation across Africa. From understanding the fundamentals of building value, to recognizing the qualities investors pay attention to when evaluating startups. Here is a look back at some of the moments from the day. #Semicolonafrica #Communityhangout #techpreneurship #startups

Nigeria cannot build a trillion-dollar economy without building its people. In this session, Sam Immanuel broke down the real constraint to growth: not capital, not ideas, but skilled human capital. He spoke about why investors fund systems that produce talent, why relying on foreign expertise limits scale, and why the digital economy gives Nigeria a rare opportunity to shift from consumption to creation. From aligning skills with market needs, to measuring progress not just outcomes, the message was direct: economic transformation starts with deliberate investment in people. This conversation reminds us that the future belongs to ecosystems that take talent development seriously. #semicolonafrica #talendevelopment #softwareengineer #economicdevelopment

The Africa Deep Tech event brought together founders, engineers, product leaders, and bold thinkers committed to solving real problems with real technology. From powerful insights by Osh Agabi and Oji Udezue, to thought-provoking moderation by Ashley Immanuel, the conversations challenged us to think bigger, move faster, and build deeper. Deep tech is not hype. It is conviction. It is long-term thinking. It is courage. And the room was filled with people ready to build. Here’s a recap of moments from Africa Deep Tech. #AfricaDeepTech #DeepTech #Innovation #AI #BuildInAfrica #SemicolonAfrica @ojiudezue @africadeeptech

A powerful conversation on human capital, technology, and Nigeria’s economic future. At Lagos Business School, The CEO of Semicolon africa, Sam Immanuel explored why skilled talent is no longer a “nice to have” but the foundation for sustainable growth. From closing the talent gap to building systems that attract capital, the session challenged how we think about education, investment, and long-term value creation. The takeaway was clear: nations that invest intentionally in people position themselves to compete, innovate, and lead.

@BRC_Africa Great question! I would encourage my 15 year old self to be more proactive and create the value/impact I want to achieve. At that age, I followed the paths set forth by school or copied what my peers were doing. I could have thought and worked more broadly.

People usually talk about the coding. What they don’t talk about enough is who you become. In this video, our learners share the parts of the Semicolon journey that don’t always make the headlines: – building self-discipline – learning how to communicate and work with people – discovering what you’re truly capable of – learning to think broadly, not just technically Semicolon is not just about learning tech skills. It’s about shaping mindset, confidence, and direction. And that part changes everything. Apply now academy.semicolon.africa #semicolonafrica #techpreneurship #softwareengineering #learnatechskill

@w_riches This is me ooo 😂 When I take a Lagos to US flight that leaves around midnight, I eat that 1am dinner every time! I left my house before dinner time to come spend hours at the airport going through various queues and checks. By the time food comes, I am hungry!

One thing I've never understood - on an overnight flight, why do 90% of passengers accept the 1am meal service and actually eat it? Do they not eat all day in anticipation of glorious microwaved aeroplane food? Or do they shove it down in case there's a food shortage in their destination country?

Different stories. Different backgrounds. One common thread: Semicolon made space for them. In this video, you’ll hear directly from members of our last graduating cohort as they share where they were before Semicolon and what the journey was like while learning, building, and growing here. Some came with uncertainty. Some came with gaps. Some came with big dreams and very little structure. What they all found was a place that believed in their potential and equipped them with the skills to move forward. No matter your background, there is room for you here. Our new cohort starts this February, and this could be your own starting point. 👉 Apply now: academy.semicolon.africa The next story we tell could be yours. #semicolonafrica #techpreneurship #softwareengineering #softwareengineer #web3

@docneto Yep, agreed! This is what my husband and I did. It’s definitely harder than the work and life we left behind in the US, but also more impactful and fulfilling. Even on the toughest days, I haven’t regretted the move.

Permit me to quote 🙏 I returned 10 years ago and now employ 90 people. Nothing I could have done in the west can hold a candle to the impact I've had in my 10 years building a business in Nigeria. If those of us that can afford to go abroad for an MBA are being discouraged from returning to start businesses, who should then be starting businesses? Who will create the prosperity to lift our nation from the doldrums of poverty. Did entrepreneurs in the early years of rich countries have it easy? Please if you're abroad and passionate about building business in Nigeria (and can afford to take the risk), don't listen to oyibos, return and start that business. Our country desperately needs you and you will find no better calling.
Pablo Alakobar@the_popemichael

I remember discussing with my talent advisor that once I finish my MBA, I want to return to Nigeria and focus on entrepreneurship. She said "I admire that passion, we see it every year amongst the African cohorts. You can see the ideas and the solutions and it draws you. Anyways, I'd like you to consider the success rate of this your goal, and then when you're done, I'm sure you'd book a session next week with me when you've decided on a new path, and we can talk more strategically". Blur.
