Instead, he returned to India, joined a monastery, & continued his research from a room with a bed & a bookshelf.

For those who think IIT-IIM folks make very high salaries in India, nothing can be farther from the truth. Yes - some lucky / talented ones do. But a significant portion of them are in the 50LPA to 75LPA range with 15-25 years of work-experience.
