🚨 BREAKING | U.S.-Kuwaiti journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin was acquitted of all charges by a court in Kuwait on Thursday and is expected to be released imminently, according to Caoilfhionn Gallagher, international counsel to Shihab-Eldin’s sisters. Shihab-Eldin was arrested by Kuwaiti authorities on March 3 reportedly over social media posts related to the Iran war. “We are relieved that, after 52 days in detention, Ahmed has been found innocent on all charges. Our focus now is upon ensuring the liberty and safety of our client,” Gallagher said in a statement. In its first ruling, a newly established court overseeing state security and terrorism crimes on Thursday issued verdicts for 137 defendants accused of “inciting sectarian strife on social media platforms,” according to Al-Rai newspaper. 17 defendants were sentenced to three years in prison; one was sentenced to 10 years; nine were acquitted; and 109 were not subject to any criminal penalty.

Five years ago today, I took these photos of one of our lemon trees in Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza. Two and a half years have passed since our home was bombed by Israel and reduced to rubble. For just as long, no one has watered the trees or tended the garden. The lemon tree, along with the oranges, olives, mangoes, peaches, eggplants, and so much else we grew, did not survive the terrorist Israeli attack. And yet, the sun has never stopped shining. Every day, it rises as if still searching for those trees, for the life that once filled that garden. That is what I choose to remember when I think of home: not the ruins resting over my books and clothes, but the light, the growth, and the garden that once lived there.

A sharp piece on Pakistan's role in US-Iran ceasefire. On the assumption that Pakistan is too unstable or externally driven, to act effectively. All this overlooks its strategic weight, global ties, and enduring geopolitical significance. By @tca_raghavan telegraphindia.com/amp/opinion/ke…

Beloved journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been detained in Kuwait for 6 weeks with no charges. As my colleague @lsmwilson writes, the case tracks with the Gulf state’s criminalization of speech, which comes amid a broad denaturalization campaign newlinesmag.com/running-notes/…

One in four #Indians living with #diabetes may already have hidden #liverdamage without knowing it, a large nationwide study has found, raising concerns about a silent complication that is largely going undetected. The study, published in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia, analysed over 9,000 patients across routine diabetes clinics in the country. It found that 26% of diabetics had clinically significant #liverfibrosis, or scarring of the liver, despite having no symptoms. Around 14% had advanced damage, and 1 in 20 patients already showed signs of cirrhosis, an irreversible stage that can lead to liver failure. @timesofindia #health #diabetes #liverdamage

To me, the idea of what #Iranians are as a community will always be this: people who apologize if their back is turned to someone on a bus. They don’t want anyone to feel disrespected, so they say, “Bebakhshid, poshtam be shomast”literally, “Sorry that my back is facing you.”

Netflix released two documentaries on journalism late last year- Cover Up and The New Yorker at 100. The former is an account of the life and times of legendary journalist Seymour Hersh by Laura Poitras, who also made the terrific Oscar nominated All The Beauty And The Bloodshed. The latter is a celebration of The New Yorker magazine in its 100th year by Oscar winning filmmaker Marshall Curry. Both films make for excellent viewing and I highly recommend you see them if you haven’t yet. I have been thinking of them in the light of the news cycle because both in part document what it took for journalists back in the day to investigate war crimes by the USA. In particular about what it took for Seymour Hersh to uncover the horrific massacre in My Lai and Harold Ross’s imaginative decision to dedicate an entire issue of the New Yorker to John Hersey’s reportage of the devastation caused in Hiroshima. Cutting through thickets of propaganda and censorship to get to the heart of these stories before the age of internet and mobile devices was extremely arduous but the documentaries also bring to light the payoffs. Both articles had seismic impacts. Hersh’s piece cemented public opinion against the Vietnam war, leading to a groundswell in protests against it. Hersey’s piece had a profound impact not just on public opinion on atomic warfare but also on public policy. Even Einstein bought several copies and distributed them. One cannot help but register that this is in sharp contrast to the times we live in. Images of murdered children have flooded our timelines, first from Gaza then from Iran. We have witnessed online the funeral procession of over 100 young school children but we cannot quite seem to muster up a response commensurate with the horrors. There are, of course, lone brave voices and pockets of resistance but it is impossible to imagine real change coming out of journalism anymore. What has changed? Your guess is as good as mine. PS - Hiroshima is available to read online without subscription. Hiroshima newyorker.com/magazine/1946/…

Umm so while US and Israel are bombing Iran, the Australian has done a front page on the regime's killings in the past? And apparently 18 days ago, the "military support" from the US and Israel came in for the people of Iran.Have words started meaning completely different things?
