My role as the face of Bodog’s early marketing was controversial, as online gambling was at the time a faceless industry, led by guys who’d made it their mission not to be recognized. When I first put myself out there as the face of the Bodog brand, our competitors said I had a massive ego. The truth was money was so tight we couldn’t afford to hire anyone to do the job, so it was either me or nothing. We had some friends at a gambling affiliate site who agreed to run a series of articles featuring pictures of Bodog’s shadowy CEO Cole Turner (my gambling nom de guerre at the time). These pictures were never clear shots, all shadows or blurry, like they were taken secretly, in a rush. We got the idea from Apocalypse Now and that silhouette photo of Col. Kurtz that Capt. Willard studies as he heads upriver. We followed that idea through by having the site report that Cole had gone upriver in Cambodia, Joseph Conrad-style, and got himself captured by pirates. In reality, I turned a Cambodian holiday into a work trip by hiring some locals to take us on a boat ride and act as ‘pirates.’ We took photos of me being captured, being held for ransom and tortured, after which Cole made his dramatic escape, with lots of fake weapons and buckets of fake blood. The affiliate ran a series of articles using the photos and alarmist copy about my alleged kidnapping. Yes, it was silly and most people saw through it immediately, but even those who thought it was lame were talking about us. It was publicity we couldn’t afford to pay for at the time. It was also good preparation for when I began fronting Bodog marketing under my real name. As was the camera crew I hired to film me going about my day Osbourne-style, just so I could get used to being on camera and not freeze up under the lights. Putting myself out front in our marketing was effective for it being unique. I was a real guy who ran the company and I was putting my reputation on the line. It gave gamblers confidence that Bodog was a legit site that would pay out if they won. We played up how much fun I was having, jet-setting to exotic locations with beautiful women, throwing epic parties and basically living the life that young men (our target market) aspire to. But I always say it was only a slight exaggeration of what my real life was at the time. In time, the Bodog brand had enough momentum to stand on its own. Truth be told, the attention started to grate after a while so I was happy to step out of the spotlight. Would I recommend it to others? Tough call. But the things you’re willing to do for your baby.
