The length of a siege doesn’t constitute a war crime. Invading a nation doesn’t either. It might be time for a rewatch.

@Mar_li1 @ptoughkneigh @kiyodia Writing insensitive letters isn’t a war crime. Iroh’s status following his conquest of Ba Sing Se is irrelevant in determining if war criminal. Iroh was judged worthy by the dragons and founded the White Lotus prior to his son’s death. There is no proof he committed war crimes.

He also wasn't just a general, he was also a prince, and would have been king if he succeeded in Ba Sing Se. He was a war criminal partaking in genocide, and didn't care until his own son died.

Taking part in a war/being a General in one doesn’t make you a war criminal. Committing war crimes makes you a war criminal. And Iroh’s Fire Nation past is too vague to confirm that.

@manznon @Mayhamiii_ I don’t see how GRRM’s purported misogyny in sexualising female children would feasibly link to what I said about morally reprehensible characters not requiring redemption arcs to be written with compassion (see Cersei’s walk of shame chapter).

@asoiaflvr @Mayhamiii_ the point is that grrm does NOT extend the same amount of compassion to cersei and that’s because he’s misogynistic and sexualizes female children. look at how he handles cersei and lancel vs khal drogo and daenerys

grrm writes female characters with impressive complexity and depth, some of the most compelling in the genre, yet his narrative ultimately affords greater compassion to male characters (ie jaime getting a redemption arc when cersei doesn't)
