Weekend Reading — So much distraction labnotes.org/weekend-readin… This week we rubber duck our GPT, got two apps to catch up on our reading, distract AI with a new social network (no, not that one), and home office rock climbing.

@perrymetzger but … everybody wants to be the super hero in their own movie. so here you have the ultimate villain that endangers all of humanity, against which only our hero can defend using their unique set of skills … alignment I guess?

Is “foom” logically possible? Maybe. I’m not convinced. Is it real world possible? I’m pretty sure no. Is long term deeply superhuman AI going to be a thing? Yes, but not a “foom”: not insane progress hours after the first AGI gets turned on even if we fully cooperate.

Eliezer and his acolytes believe it’s inevitable AIs will go “foom” without warning, meaning, one day you build an AGI and hours or days later the thing has recursively self improved into godlike intelligence and then eats the world. Is this realistic?

@perrymetzger not possible. software improvement: incremental improvement rate trends down. hardware improvement: need new factories, decades and billions of dollars. what could foom do that some nation state with cyber unit and lesser AI would not have already accomplished?

I absolutely knew when I planned this series I would get a lot of McQueen submissions. This episode of "How Do You Make That?" focuses on 3 viewer submitted McQueen garments. youtu.be/O4qgYmsS5m0

@CindyBiSV try phind.com I asked it to list competitors for a pre-launch startup, reasonably good summary. Bard hallucinated based on some other company with a similar name. Output depends on the search results, so you do have to reframe questions (just like Google search)

Bard pukes out inaccurate info all the time, otherwise it'd have saved so much time than google search and check a few websites to compare (DD competitors).

AI product A: type a short description, and voila, we'll draft a "personal" email and generate an overview deck, schedule a follow-up meeting, update the CRM, ... 😎 AI product B: drowning in firehose of email, pitch decks..., calendar tetris? We'll distill it into a short summary🥱 For every LLM context expander, there is a counterpart compressor being built, and the signal loss of going to and from these latent spaces is the unquantified unknown. Fun (and noisy) times ahead.

Serious question. Why can’t a bank just charge a SaaS style annual fee that you pay for them to just hold/protect your money? They don’t touch it. No trading, no investing. Just let it sit there. If you have $1M there no one would have any problem paying $30K a year.

@CindyBiSV My guess if these offers were any good they would still be on the table on Monday, and in panic people make rush decisions, so the offers are tailored to take advantage of that, but also I’m optimistic about liquidity come Monday (caveat: US time zone)

With limited management fees (depending on fund size), how do you prioritize which portcos to help, and how much for each? If hedge funds offer 50-70 cents on the dollar for direct acquisition of SVB deposits, with a lending facility, would you take it now, or wait until Monday with more info.
Seth Bannon@sethbannon

Hearing some VCs balk at loaning cash to their startups impacted by SVB so they can meet payroll, saying they can't "as a fiduciary". Yes you can. Just don't use LP money. Do it from your management company like we're doing. Or, if you can, personally like @sama and @vkhosla.

@lolitataub A good connection is better then none, but a cold reach is also better than no reach; lots of small firms hungry for pipeline, start there, they can help Intro you upwards

🤔 Asking for a founder: I've been told, "never outreach to a VC cold" and yet many of my mutual connections on LinkedIn say they don't know the person well enough to give an intro. What's the best way to get introduced to VCs?

@CindyBiSV There’s this thing called “media bias” where people get to believe reality is made of what gets reported in the news, and right now the news portrays tech as the four horsemen, and it’s easier to reason with a goat

Ah wonderful, the old “you idiots kept your money in a *bank*, you deserve your comeuppance” argument is spreading. Last time the country acted this way triggered *checks notes* the Great Depression. But hey, let’s meme our way through and see what happens!
