@mattyglesias Smaller houses = Less expensive Larger houses = More expensive We should celebrate this development as a sign of improved housing affordability, on the margin. Especially since the nation's average household size continues to fall! (2.65 in 2014 --> 2.50 in 2024)

Unused office space + efficient layouts = more affordable downtown housing. Transforming vacant offices into co-living spaces could help cities like Denver, Minneapolis, and Seattle tackle homelessness and improve housing affordability. @gensler_design pew.org/4dYDUHg

Not everyone uses a mortgage to buy their home. Some turn to land contracts, where sellers directly provide financing. But a patchwork of laws makes this risky for buyers. The federal government is paying attention. pew.org/4fqMoIV

These reforms have boosted Minneapolis' housing availability: • Eliminate parking mandates • Encourage apartments in commercial corridors • Establish height minimums near jobs and transit • Permit duplexes, triplexes on *all* lots pew.org/3TOOUR1

@yitgordon I did a Silver Line staycation earlier this year, so checked out a bunch of eateries along the new portion of the line. My favorites: 1) Yen's Cafe (Ashburn) 2) Yu Noodles (Herndon) 3) WOOBOI Chicken (Reston Town Center) IMO these are three of the best spots in the DMV.

I’m working on a food story about Metro-accessible establishments along the Silver Line, so tell me about your favorite spots to grab 🍺, 🍕, 🥗, 🍷, 🍦, 🥐, 🍸, 🍣, 🌮, ☕️ and more from McLean to Ashburn! Help me end the stereotype that NoVA is nothing but soulless chains! 🚇

A new study from researchers at the @UTAustin, published by @FurmanCenterNYU and sponsored by @pewtrusts, shows that zoning reform can increase the availability and affordability of housing without these adverse effects. Here's a 🧵 on a brief by @astaveski & @AlexHrwtzz

For all the progressive rhetoric in cities like New York and Los Angeles, Houston is doing far more to create affordable homeownership opportunities citywide with its (near) citywide allownce of townhouse and small lot homes.
Pew States@PewStates

🆕 Among the 4 largest U.S. cities, NYC, LA, and Chicago saw a decrease in Black residents over the past two decades, while Houston saw an increase. One way Houston allowed more housing—reducing its minimum lot size requirements. #TXlege pew.org/48i3N2U

NEW: Data illustrates how housing costs drive homelessness levels. 📈 As rents rise, so does homelessness. Fortunately, in regions like Minneapolis and Houston that added housing and kept rent growth low, homelessness dropped: pew.org/3qyGxNn

I'm sure that Democrats in the legislature had good intentions here, but it's frankly depressing that no one thought to review the available evidence before advancing this bill. Will @CountyExecBello be the one who changes that?

Research shows that "ban-the-box" policies barely affect employment outcomes for formerly incarcerated individuals. Worse, they make getting a job harder for young, not formerly-incarcerated Black men. (See @NCSLorg's excellent lit review): bit.ly/3Qy1JgQ

Really disappointing to read @david_andreatta's latest article for @WXXINews and learn that @monroecounty_ny just passed a so-called "ban-the-box" policy for public sector employees that is ~10 years behind the research consensus.

Mortgages unlock homeownership and wealth opportunities for millions of Americans. Yet, small mortgages to purchase low-cost homes are scarce, leaving many Americans struggling to buy a home. #NationalHomeownershipMonth pew.org/44gFuji

New: Areas in New York that saw the slowest rent growth from 2017 to 2023 made more housing available. Areas with strict zoning that couldn’t keep up with the housing demand saw rents spike. Why adding more housing improves affordability: pew.org/3CcKw4t

NEW: Cities that made their zoning more flexible saw an increase in homes *and* kept rent growth low between 2017 and 2023. Our experts explain: pew.org/41eWa9v

More people in smaller households require more homes. That shortage is what’s driving up rents in Colorado, and policymakers are taking notice. pew.org/44c44lZ

Homelessness is higher in areas where rents are higher, new research shows. What’s more is cities are finding ways to keep housing costs and homelessness low. How? Making enough housing available—especially lower-cost options. pew.org/4282yjb
