Right, that's me done for today. I've shared lots of #AtariST stuff whilst battling in Times of Lore. What a day lol. I think I need a cuppa tea and put my feet up ;) So I'll leave you with the rather excellent Rubicon 👉🏻 ataricrypt.blogspot.com/2018/10/rubico…

Yeah back then pretty much every school had a room full of the Model B's. Sadly for us mostly these were used for educational software but as an incentive, once you finished the work you could play a game for the rest of the lesson which was usually Frak!, Snapper, Hopper or Maze. Happy times!

Happy birthday to Thrust! Exactly 40 years ago today (May 11, 1986) this masterpiece was released. And if you thought getting out of the hangar in Raid over Moscow was a piece of cake, you gotta try Thrust! You pilot a spaceship with realistic (!) inertia and gravity physics. Your mission is straight forward, yet anything but simple: infiltrate hostile planets, descend into underground caverns, and use a tractor beam to lift pods from the bottom. You then have to fly them safely back to space while battling gravity, cave walls, limited fuel, and enemy gun turrets. Precise thrust and rotation control are absolutely essential - the pod swings like a heavy pendulum on a stiff beam, making navigation tricky and giving the spaceship different handling and control compared to no payload. Later levels add doors, complex mazes, and even tougher challenges. Takes a crap ton of practice but it's also extremely addictive once you get the hang of it.

@nyimski @exQUIZitely Yeah sounds about right. The college only had about 6 of these computers in its library. Played games, no work done, best days of my life lol. Great computers - better than the Amstrad PCs that came the following year!

@AtariCrypt @exQUIZitely Likely the Model B I would think, I first played it on my beloved Electron, the BEEB's baby brother. Great game one that I became a dab hand at though having played it again recently I realise that I am very out of practice.

There's only so much exploration and mapping I can do without looking inside the (virtual) box. This map will help me a lot... I'd have loved to have bought #TimesOfLore back in the day and used its map. :)

#TimesOfLore is a game where it pays to explore the landscape, as you wonder what to do and where to go next. And those boots make all the difference!!! So, now I'm being sent on another quest... I love this #AtariST game!!

Buy me!! #AtariST #VGA
SidecarTridge@sidecartridge

Steve from @ataricrypt has just published a great review of the ST2VGA Enhanced and I cannot recommend it enough if you still have an #Atari ST and you are suffering from the dreaded "jail bars" syndrome. What makes the Enhanced version different from every passive ST-to-VGA dongle out there: • A real active video stage that amplifies the analog signal before it reaches your monitor. No more washed-out colors, no more jail bars dancing across the screen. • Ultra-sharp picture on pretty much any VGA monitor you throw at it. Steve tested it on two different ones, both nailed it. • USB-powered, so you can feed it from a cartridge-port dongle, your Mac, or any USB brick you have lying around. If you have been holding off because the previous ST2VGA gave you headaches, this is the one. Huge thanks to Steve for taking the time to put it through its paces. 🙌 Full review: ataricrypt.blogspot.com/2026/04/st2vga… Get yours: sidecartridge.com/products/st2vg…

I was playing a PC EGA graphics game this morning, and it really made me appreciate the Atari ST a lot more. EGA was popular until ~ 1990, and on paper has great specs - 640x350 with 16 colors. Much better than the ST's 320x200x16 colors. But EGA's palette is very weak.. It's 64 colors - which are largely dominated by shades of red. There's not nearly enough blue and green variations. EGA makes for pretty good colored text, and spreadsheets -- but for games and graphics, the ST's 512 color palette is much better. (Even the Atari 8bit's 256 color palette is way better..) Pic 1 - EGA palette, Pic 2 - Atari ST palette, Pic 3 - Atari 8bit palette. Last but not least, the ST gets crap for it's cheap 3-channel YM soundchip.. but it's leagues better than what most PCs had on offer throughout the entire 1980s. I still like both the ST and PC platforms, and the PC became amazing around about 1990 (albeit still expensive), but the ST was a really *exceptional* bargain throughout the 1980s.

Storm '94 #AtariSTe Genuinely a superb overhead shooter (PD iirc). I love this game, but it needs someone to hack it - to remove its dreaded timer. Totally ruins the game :/ 👇🏻 ataricrypt.blogspot.com/2016/06/storm-… Any ST hackers out there??? 💪🏻

Not a big reader myself, but I hear the Naturom Demonto conjures demons that turn Atari STs into Amigas. So I'd better burn this book before anything nasty happens...

Exploration is key in #TimesOfLore, so I went out to see what's what. Eventually, (hours later!) I found a tavern. Inside is a guy who wants to sell me his Magic Boots!! Shame I don't have enough gold, so I need to head back out and kill people for theirs... All in a gamer's life, eh? ataricrypt.blogspot.com
