A great initiative: “Ethiopia Stroke Foundation” established by Dr. Wondwossen Gebreamanuel and his wife. The Foundation is a non-profit focused on stroke awareness, therapeutic support and advancing education and research in #Ethiopia and across Africa. Dr. Wondossen is a brilliant neurologist and NeuroEndovascular surgeon who returned from the U.S. three years ago to co-found, with Dr. Akeza Teame, also a returnee from the U.S., “Axon Stroke and Spine Medical Center”, the first and only comprehensive stroke center in Ethiopia. This is an excellent example of the impactful contributions by talented diasporas to their country of birth. “Brain-gain” at its best! The launch ceremony, held last night, which included testimonials from stroke survivors, was heart-worming and inspiring. The mayor of Addis Abeba, H.E. Adanech Abiebie, was the guest of honor and spoke passionately of her administration’s support to the foundation’s efforts and a new state-of-the-art stroke hospital that will be built by Axon on 2 hectares of land in the Kazanchish area of Addis.

So long, dear friend! Rest in eternal peace, knowing that you gave everything you had to your work and your people. You are now traveling light, having left an indelible mark on all of us. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Dr. Fikru worked tirelessly until his last breath, driven by a vision he set out to realize over two decades ago. Our nation has lost a true citizen who selflessly shared his knowledge and skills for the betterment of his fellow Ethiopians. The medical community has lost an exemplary pioneer and leader in healthcare. For those of us who knew him personally, we have lost a true friend and brother.

I woke up this morning to heartbreaking news—the passing of a dear friend and brother, Dr. Fikru Maru. I have had the privilege of knowing Dr. Fikru for the past two decades, during which we worked closely together. We jointly along with other members cofounded and led the Ethiopian Private Hospitals Association for four years. He was one of the most pleasant, dedicated, kind, and charismatic individuals I have ever had the honor to work with.

On 13 January 2025, @WHO informed its Member States and International Health Regulations (IHR) State Parties of an outbreak of suspected #Marburg Virus Disease in Kagera region, #Tanzania, using our secure web-based platform – the Event Information Site (EIS). Under the IHR, the EIS Platform is used by WHO to issue rapid alerts to Member States of acute and rapidly developing public health risks and events with possible international implications. We are aware of 9 cases so far, including 8 people who have died. We would expect further cases in coming days as disease surveillance improves. WHO has offered its full assistance to the government of Tanzania, and to affected communities. Marburg virus disease is an infectious, severe and often fatal disease caused by a filovirus. Rapid action saves lives, including ensuring people with symptoms receive prompt care. We recommend neighboring countries be on alert and prepared to manage potential cases. We do not recommend travel or trade restrictions with Tanzania at this time.
