Hi everyone, my name is Patience Tei, and I am an environmental activist. I speak out against illegal mining, which continues to pollute my country’s environment. About three months ago, I conceived the idea to create a digital platform that not only promotes accountability but also educates users on the harmful impacts of illegal mining. The digital platform is called Galamsey Detector and it’s being developed in collaboration with a tech firm @athmontechfirm Ghana is experiencing an environmental crisis that is steadily destroying our natural resources. Illegal mining commonly known as galamsey is contaminating rivers, degrading forests, and destroying livelihoods. Remote sensing data from the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI) has revealed that 60,000 hectares of forest land equivalent to 84,000 football fields have been destroyed in southern Ghana alone in the last 17 years. More than 60% of Ghana’s water sources have been polluted with mercury and cyanide, posing serious risks to public health. Institutions mandated to protect our land and water resources have been weakened by political interference. Although civil society organizations, environmental activists and concerned citizens are actively fighting this menace, much of the information being gathered is disorganized and not easily accessible to the public. This is where Galamsey Detector comes in. Galamsey Detector is a nonpartisan digital platform designed to serve as an educational and evidence-based accountability tool. The digital platform will provide verified information on polluted rivers, forests, and recently raided illegal mining hotspots by NAIMOS. It will support CSOs in advocacy, reporting, and public pressure campaigns, while also helping citizens understand who is responsible and how to demand action. Information provided by the app will be sourced from government agencies, civil society organizations, verified community reports and media & investigative journalism. The digital platform will also include a whistleblower feature that protects the identity of individuals who want to report illegal mining activities but fear intimidation or threats. Their evidence will be time stamped with geographical information of where illegal mining is occurring to be able to demand accountability from state authorities. I am currently seeking funding to support the development of this digital platform. This would go into development, data verification, security features and initial testing. Together we can fight against illegal mining. Be a citizen, not a spectator #StopGalamseyNow
